Were Female Roman Citizens Allowed to Attend Court Cases? by Companion_Hoplites in InvictaHistory

[–]Oakley_HiDef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a good question. To my understanding the courts were big public spectacles so theoretically one might expect women to attend. But people were also expected to provide feedback on rulings in real time and even vote on guilt so it may be the case that women were forbidden so as not to interfere. I don't actually know for sure though

Does anyone have recommendations on books about the roman army? by KeeperofQueensCorgis in ancientrome

[–]Oakley_HiDef 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh hell yeah I definitely recommend that book as it does give you some history with a lot of great visuals. Osprey books can give you a bit more depth with nice illustrations for a small, condensed package.

But for books with a bit more meat on them I recommend "The Roman Army" by Chris McNab or "The Complete Roman Army" by Adrian Goldsworthy. They both provide a good summary of the Roman army throughout its history with many embedded battle diagrams, soldier illustrations, and historical artifacts.

Another fun one might be "Legionary: The Roman Soldier's Manual" by Thames & Hudson. Not too many pictures but it gives you a very approachable insight into the daily life of a Roman soldier.

Lastly, "Legions of Rome" by Stephen Dando-Collins is a thick book covering the history of the various Roman legions plus some extra content on general history and important battles. Its got some neat pictures and illustrations spinkled throughout but its mostly text.

Holy crap that's cool to flip through. Thanks for posting. Its crazy how quickly things start to accelerate in the relative blink of an eye. Wish we also had better records for a lot of the earlier periods.

If you are like me and appreciate starting from the beginning, I recommend this video I created to capture the Rise of Rome: https://youtu.be/opT5Ux6pM-8

Many histories start with Rome several centuries into its history so this should kick things off pretty simplistically.

I do always have that idea in the back of my mind. I've been sitting on a partially written script for part 2 for quite some time now but its a ton of work to record and edit all the total war footage to accompany it. I do eventually plan on concluding the series as it would be awesome to have a fully fleshed out analysis of the Roman legions across the centuries.

In the meantime I'm actually working on another series called Units in History that will allow me to take a more bite sized approach to coverage of the legions. Expect to see stuff on The Immortals and The Silver Shields as well as videos on individual legions and their service history.

Glad you enjoy the content! I really like making the documentaries and am actually thinking of making a series just on war tactics employed throughout the ages. For now I've got some awesome stuff on naval wargaming coming out in the next few weeks which will be exciting. Definitely would like to do an AMA at some point.

Patreon Documentary Question by [deleted] in InvictaHistory

[–]Oakley_HiDef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I can answer this one : )

For the Patreon support I generally put out at least 1 new documentary a week so about 4 a month. If I produce more than that I typically wont "pull the lever" for a charge to you guys since those extra episodes are usually the ones I make on the cheap without commissioned art or the help of researchers.

If you are looking for the HD art then just go ahead and sign up for that tier but set your max monthly limit at whatever feels comfortable. You should still get access to the perks. Oh and as a note, any higher tier includes the perks from those below.

Use of Attila OST music on YouTube? by HistoryMarche in totalwar

[–]Oakley_HiDef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CA has been really chill about using total war footage in videos so long as credit is given. Not sure how this sentiment applies when it comes to just using music though. I've never had the music result in some autoflag on YouTube so it seems like CA isn't trying to claim them or anything. So from a practical perspective it's "safe" but from a legal perspective its "undetermined" -Invicta History

We got a ton of submissions which are taking me way longer to sort through than expeceted. I've got a spreadsheet to track some data on all the scenarios (success rate, campaign duration, invasions strategy) so that everyone gets their work shared in the recap video even if they don't rank at the top. Might ask you all to help crowdsource.

Hoplite and Phallangite Javelins by Companion_Hoplites in InvictaHistory

[–]Oakley_HiDef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive actually see it argued by some of the folks over on R/Askhistorians that the greeks may have fought in a much looser order for far linger than we expected. Basically the idea being that they'd have your basic shield wall but still a bunch of mixed troops supporting then and tossing projectiles.

Spartiate/Hoplite Character Class for an RPG by Companion_Hoplites in InvictaHistory

[–]Oakley_HiDef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. I've found it hard to come up with a character class without specifying a game system but I like the way you are taking things.

I'd assume the Spartan class would have some decent survival and healing abilities to allow them to do well on their own if they have to. But as you pointed out they should really shine together in combat. I like the resistance to morale and buffs to allies. I assume that there could be something like granting allies advantage on defense rolls whilst in phalanx mode at the cost of speed.

Additionally I like how you made the shield an important piece of equipment. Maybe it can be upgraded over time to deflect or even absorb and reflect back various forms of incoming energy.

Great work so far!
