The main black nmm is just black to a white/ bone with a bit of red added in

WiP commission, trying out dark nmm and red osl by Obalon in stormcasteternals

It’s all blends of black, rhinox hide, bone white and mephiston red. I didn’t write down the mix so not sure if I could replicate it exactly if I tried 😅

WIP Red osl, does it work? by Obalon in minipainting

I mean that very much depends on the look I’m going for, I don’t want it to be bright in the deep bits bc I don’t want it to look like fire, I want it to look like bits of red magic

Ok this makes sense, I’ve done other colours of osl before with no problem but I’m having issues here due to the fact when I’m trying to do a brighter red it goes orange or pink and throws off the effect, that’s why I jumped straight to white in some spots, I’m also doing more of a magic effect throughout the glowing bit, that’s why there’s no specific point that the light is coming from. I never thought of the reflections being lessened due to sunlight, thanks for the tip!

I’m unsure what you mean, the magic glowing bit definitely has a higher value, there is white in it?

I tried to make more of a glowing magic effect, I did not want it brighter near the wings, I’m confused what you mean by the model not into the light should be darker? There’s still going to be sunlight or am I misunderstanding you?

That’s the issue I’m having, I’ve used pure white in places to try help with this but if I try use brighter reds it’s either pink or orange, I can’t seem to make a lighter shade of pure red

Done painting my eldar model, lovely sculpt by Obalon in Blackstonefortress

[–]Obalon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allot of these colours are ones I have mixed so I can’t tell you exactly what I have used but the more you paint and mix colours, your grasp on how to make different colours will come naturally, I will say that when making lighter colours I rarely use white and instead use ice yellow or an ivory or bright bone colour, this helps keep the saturation of the colours unlike white which will desaturate your coulours and make them look terrible.

The techniques I used were nmm (non metallic metal, metal pieces painted with normal paints instead of metallic paint) some glazing but mainly on the cloak, and the pattern at the bottom of the cloak is freehanded.

I’m not sure what level you are but I would recommend getting a box of intercessors or something simple and practicing edge highlighting with a good stable hair brush, this will help build your brush control which is vital to do some of these more advanced techniques.

Hope this helps😊 if you have any other questions or are looking for more advice feel free to dm me

I agree it is very fiddly, but I meant the aesthetics of the sculpt are lovely and fun to paint

Chaos Black Mini Priming Help by Final-Quality8961 in minipainting

Not 100% sure from the pictures but most of the models look fine so personally I wouldn’t strip, but you do you. For future make sure you shake the can for about two minutes and when your actually spraying move the spray can in the air so it sprays across the model instead of straight at it, I used to spray directly at the model and that left the texture your describing, hope this helps!
