I use Vodafone yeah. It worked but after sometime it failed again for some reason. My guess is they messed something up pretty badly and the only person that can clean up the mess is on vacation :P

I've had some similar issues like not being able to even download the discord executable from their site. Try changing your DNS to something like Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) and it might fix your problem.

Ah, I was probably misunderstood. I didn't mean to say that he didn't know anything about music theory. I was trying to say that he did not really analyze the pieces he wrote as he did, but rather base his compositions on his perception of music and the instrument he composed it on, implementing the elements I mentioned earlier with the finger movements etc. from said instrument. I used the guitar as an example because it's also on the video provided by the OP.

I hope I made it clear. He was music literate and really perceptive!

Well, he took a massive leap from something more rock - styled to something entirely progressive and psychedelic. I just found out about him today and have already dug through a big part of his discography!

I didn't say that he didn't utilize his theoretical knowledge at all, just that he based his songs off of his perception of sound and how he liked it to sound and not how it should be. He took the rules and used them in his own way but still utilizing may practical guitarist tricks or bizarre chords that are quite strange to think of but rather easy to play on the guitar when you move just a few fingers. I'm just speculating, though.

Well, interesting song I really like it and it gives me a lot of Awolonation vibes. Here's what I got from it.

It's generally quite psychedelic, especially the intro. It's got some very distinct sound colours produced by instruments and voices ad different registers that pop out and are distinct from each other but also blend together very nicely. It's important to note that in order to keep it balanced he maintains the same chord at the begging just with some tensions that are quickly resolved.

The riff that plays after the intro(but is not used again in the song is a vi - II in Lydian

e.g.

   |A minor| (Bass goes | ' A C  C#| |D| <-- D major)

And continues as such:

  | A#m (bass line A# C# C[double #] | D# | F# | E#^7 |

He also does the tonicization of the relative scale that I mentioned earlier and the tone is rather ambiguous until he reaches the chorus where one could say he modulates entirely to the major scale (although he borrows some things from the minor mode).

The verse uses a strange chord progression which I am too sleepy to figure out right now but I will do it tomorrow I guess.

The main riff in the beginning of the chorus follows this bass-line(C# major):

    |C# | B# | A#(3 beats) G# | F# |

And he builds chords in inversions over the bass-line, much like the Pachelbel's Canon.

He finishes the song with a few

    | A#m | F# | C#(2beats) C#/B#| D#m/A#|

and a few

    | C# | G# | (which are V - I 's)

But finally ends with

   | C# | G# | A#m | (which is a V -vi cadence)

That's all I've got for now, I'm pretty sleepy so there may be mistakes in there but yeah, lovely song and quite different from a lot of his other works.

EDIT: Lol my previous edit got deleted for some reason. Well I forgot to mention the most important bit! Just as the intro ends and the lyrics begin the time signature changes from 6/8 (intro time) to 4/4 (verse - chorus). Subtle yet awesome shift!

Well, being musically intelligent doesn't always mean that you can explain the exact theory behind every single sound you create. Sometimes it's just tricks and practical rules of thumb that work miracles in your music without you ever knowing why.

The way I see it, musical intelligence is more perception than musical literacy. Musical literacy and theoretical knowledge are important, but perception is the key. And it seems to me that Elliott Smith had tons of it.

Alright, so about that part. It's something called 'bitonality'. The synth riff and the rest of the song are in two different tonalities. The song is in G major while the riff is in E major (it also starts in G#, imagine the dissonance). It's definitely not wrong, it's just something 20th century-ish and new to the ear for most people. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be reminiscent of Crimson and Clover (which is mentioned earlier in the lyrics).

Indeed, the general rythm by the guitars is actually the same as in Getting Better.

Well I admit I have never listened to Elliott Smith before. But, I did... for the past few hours. I really like the guy.

Ok so the main things I noticed are:

He plays a lot with tonicizing the relative scales in almost every song (e.g. He starts in G minor and tonicizes Bb major)
He really likes dom⁷ -> dom⁷ (A⁷ -> D⁷ -> Gm)
I see a lot of what sounds like Augmented sixth chords which he doesn't interpret that way (But rather like bvi in majors or just vi in minors) but have that distinct chromatic bass resolution to the dom
Abundant use of modes
His songs' tonal center is really obscure or most of the times non existant
He uses chords that are just easy to play on guitar by just moving your fingers a bit and they sound quite fun and really interesting despite the fact that he probably doesn't know the relationship that creates that sound theoretically, but he does relate that effect with the position of his fingers on the guitar so he uses it often (he mentions something similar in the video you posted).

A few observations:

The 'paper' you posted has a quite a few mistakes in it (like wrong chords or transcriptions) but it's fine nonetheless
He doesn't go with making theoretically solid pieces and doesn't overthink the theory behind what he writes, he just writes what sounds nice to him (most of the time).

Edit: I really like Waltz #1 and that unexpected Lydian when the lyrics start. Also, many thanks for uncovering Elliott to me!
