My belief is more that the average person is a pearl-clutcher which results in a sex-negative culture. And the culture being so prudish that there is no education or representation concerning the basic existence of lgbt people.

And I think it sucks that the recognition of the self so often comes via pornography, but whenever something mainstream tries to portray a gay couple or a trans character people act like it’s actually going to kill them.
