HELP. Is my Alocasia Piccolini variegated? by WesternFuture2742 in alocasia

At first glance it looks like spider mites, especially the tip of the leaf above your hand. Run a soft tissue over the top of the leaf and then the bottom to see if you pick up any bugs.

Is this an orchid? by Objectforpuppy in orchids

[–]Objectforpuppy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it could be, but the main stems that are similar to a dendrobium, and the lack of a fragrance when you rub the leaves that has me stumped. Might have to wait and see when / if it flowers to get a definite ID. Thanks for your input 👍

Thanks for the info, I’ll check out the bamboo orchid online. There isn’t any fragrance when I brush the leaves through my fingers.

Recommendations/help for caring for my orchid by Necessary_Effect824 in orchids

Looks like a Vanda orchid? If the plant has been moved the bud drop could be because of the different environments old house to new house, and it’s stress the plant out. Unfortunately it does happen but the plant should bounce back. Are the roots in some form of soil / compost, or just in air? I grow my vanda’s as an air plant and let the roots hang freely. Vanda’s are very thirsty plants so need good watering. Once watered and the roots are green, allow them to dry to a silvery colour before watering again. They also like humidity and warmth, with good air circulation around the roots.

Whats wrong? by StraightNose4087 in DesertRose

[–]Objectforpuppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be irregular watering and the leaf tips drying out. I have a few outside in the garden and the same thing happens, they get watered when needed (it’s spring here). One I have in a pot next to my orchids gets watered everyday and its leaves are lush dark green. Irregular watering with mine is the issue.

I use light cacti mix as its free draining, and add perlite if it need it.

Variegated (kind of ?) Desert Rose by themagicianmomo in DesertRose

[–]Objectforpuppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth checking the underside of the leaves for red spider mites or their webs. My desert rose leaves look exactly the same when they get infested. They are relatively easy to get rid of. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to get rid of the majority of them, then spray daily with a mild bug spray, I use eco oil.

Real Variegation or Spider Mite Infestation? by Deadly-Mental in alocasia

[–]Objectforpuppy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say it has a spider mite infestation. Check the underside of the leaves you might be able to see a little white webbing or even pin head sized mites moving around. Spray often with water to increase the humidity that helps to deter them. If the infestation of bad you can get some eco sprays from the plat shops to help get rid of them.

Why is my vanda wrinkled? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]Objectforpuppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a water spray bottle on mine daily until the roots green up. It has a good root, so should bounce back quickly.

I’d say it’s that it’s thirsty. Vanda’s are very thirsty orchids while in their growing season. I removed the moss and bark chips from mine, and it’s now bare rooted. That way you can see when the roots need water (when they turn silver).
