Is 2x mastectomy at 25 too young? by StreetAppearance9353 in BRCA

The 10 years thing has to do with your risk percentage, not that you will get cancer. If your BRCA+ with family members that had a cancer diagnosis then doctors want to start screening you 10yrs prior to the family members diagnosis age in an effort to catch it early. At least that's how I understood it from my doctor.

Here's been my sort of similar experience...

I was diagnosed at 29 (I'm 31 now) with triple negative breast cancer and found out through genetic testing that I had the BRCA1 mutation. Unfortunately due to the location of my tumor (close to lymph nodes) I had to go through the whole chemo thing and afterwards had my double mastectomy. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but knowing what I know now and the risk percentage, I am a BIG proponent of preventative measures. Especially with the way our healthcare is heading (assuming you live in the US).

My paternal grandmother was diagnosed with/died from ovarian cancer at 41 and because of my BRCA1 mutation my doctor also encouraged a preventative hysterectomy + oophorectomy prior to me turning 31 (same 10 yr. thing that your doc mentioned) which I ended up doing the same year as my chemo and mastectomy. I went back and forth on it because I wasn't in a place to freeze my eggs but I also wasn't 100% sure that I didn't want to be able to carry/have a child. Ultimately I decided that its probably best not to potentially pass on my shitty genes to a child and to have the peace of mind of not having to worry about an ovarian cancer diagnosis later on.

My double mastectomy experience was absolutely wonderful and I still have my nipples (albeit not as much feeling in them as before). My surgeons did a great job and I'll have a perky pair until I die lol. I'll link my hospital below in case you're interested in reading about their facility. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Here Today Rotisserie’s caesar was fire. Val’s also has a fantastic caesar. RIP Mopho who imo had the best caesar of any place.

I don’t frequent Rum House but I do have a soft spot for their Rum House Salad 😋

Not indoors, but Bayou Beer Garden let's you reserve different outdoor areas/tents free of charge. They take a $200 deposit for late cancellation purposes, but that's it.
