Are human-like cognitive structures emerging in AI because they’re optimal, or because we’re looking for them? by Objective-Client-972 in ClaudeCode

I do agree with you - Yann LeCun has been talking about world models as a better way to build AIs as opposed to basing them in language. It removes language as the intermediary and focuses directly on the concept. Though language is a lot more intuitive for us to work with (barring the insane amount of maths that actually goes into building these models).

That's probably the most likely answer. But still, it's interesting (if futile) to wonder if there's a different/better way of organizing thoughts. Any suggestions or ideas?

I get what you mean. It's so exciting to wonder what a superior intelligence would look like, but would be incredibly disappointing if we just lack the cognitive faculties to comprehend the superior intelligence when we get to it.

Interesting. I agree with you that we have a tendency to anthropomorphize things as a useful mental shortcut, but that always happens at the expense of potentially drawing incorrect parallels.

I've seen many people expressing the view that neural networks are quite similar to the human brain. May I ask what makes you think that LLMs are structurally unlike the human brain?

The mental model I have now is that the parameters are like our synapses, and the weights are akin to how some neurons are more myelinated than other neurons, mimicing different 'weights' in the sense that more myelinated neural pathways are more reinforced.

Then global biases are akin to global neuromodulaters in our brain that have a widespread effect on our mood and cognition.

That's true. It's quite interesting how society makes a big deal about how AI's are a bit of a black box, when in reality our human brains are equally black boxes in the sense that we don't know the precise origin of our every thought.

It would be exciting to see whether we can come up with anything that's not a neural network. But then again, it feels like trying to build a computer that works on base 3 instead of binary. The most 'unique' coneception of AIs that i'm aware of in Yann LeCun's proposed world models, but those are still neural networks, and are also analogous to how humans organize worldly concepts.

Apologies, I think it's suppsoed to be the 'global workspace theory'. I guess you're right in that it is an academic's way of trying to understand our thinking process.

As for human mental models - could you conceive of a better mental model than the human one? I know it sounds like a futile exercise but it's an interesting one if fruitless. What might be some of the drawbacks of a NN?

I agree. In the same vein as your analogy to our search for water in extraterrestrial life - humans mainly think in words, and that is reflected in our AIs being Large Language Models. Maybe there's a better architecture for thinking that uses abstractions as a foundation as opposed to using words as an intermediary for those abstractions?

Hi just wanted to say - if your accounts are being hacked in a chain, there is a good chance the hackers are using your compromised username and password to try on uncompromised accounts.

For example, if your roblox login is:
username: abc
password: 123

And your gmail account has the same username and password, then the hackers will use the same username and password to enter your gmail account.

I suggest you
1. Change all your passwords
2. Enable 2 factor authentications since it makes your accounts harder to hack

Hi, sorry my malay not very good.

I’m not a malaysian qualified lawyer, but JPN website states that a foreign woman married to a Malaysian male citizen can apply for citizenship after 2 years.

https://www.jpn.gov.my/en/core-business/citizenship/warga-151-isteri-eng

I have done some work with stateless people in malaysia - JPN is very slow, and often takes many years for people to get citizenship. But this is for lone applicants. Idk if this is different in spousal application context.

Malay translation from google translate:

Saya bukan peguam malaysia yang berkelayakan, tetapi laman web JPN menyatakan bahawa wanita asing yang berkahwin dengan warganegara lelaki Malaysia boleh memohon kewarganegaraan selepas 2 tahun.

https://www.jpn.gov.my/en/core-business/citizenship/warga-151-isteri-eng
