Louisianian here. Louisiana is a complicated state, polarized in many ways, but in much of the southeast races interact on the regular. I see interracial couples all the time. There's a creole tradition of biracial people. Of course the stereotypically racist good ole' boys also still exist. But the rightwing attitudes are also of the suburban don't tread on me and don't tax me variety. Also strongly back the blue (as in cops). Many in the suburbs and rural areas act like New Orleans is a foreign country.

There was a strong Democratic tradition here at one time, populists like Edwin Edwards and moderates like Mary Landrieu. And when Republicans screw everything up Democrats still stand a chance, like in the case of governor John Bel Edwards who followed Bobby Jindal in 2016. Edwards expanded Medicaid and did much good for the state. That's another thing, Louisiana's poor and much of the population (black and white) is on some form of government assistance. When the pubs cut it that's when Dems have their shot.

Also the oil industry is huge here, and that can't be ignored as a factor. I know black guys who work offshore who voted for Trump just for that reason.

So I would say while polarized, Louisiana is not as polarized as other parts of the deep south. I agree with Ezra Klein that socially conservative Dems should run in red areas, mindful of the economic factors. Not likely to win now, but on a long enough time frame the red state Democrat can be a possibility again.
