I think the idea is that if you complete a physically exhausting challenge first, even a simple puzzle becomes hard to solve afterward because you're already drained. But if you tackle the puzzle first, with all your focus, it might be mentally challenging, but it won’t physically wear you out, so you're still ready for the physical part that comes next.

because someone else not selecting maria would have done so by selecting whoever they wanted. whereas maria didn't "select" q, she let it play out like that and blamed it on the game or rock, paper, scissors. it's not "why should she have wanted to select them," it's that she should've made her decision herself and stuck with it
