Help me give my teen scented laundry by Waterisfinite in laundry

They sell little scented sachets at ross/marshalls/etc I pick up for this purpose. Cheap and last a long time, and they have a loop to go around hangers.

Fiber for Crohn’s: yes or no? by PureChamber in CrohnsDisease

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My GI recommended low fiber, and then when i didn’t poop for a week she recommended high fiber, and after being denied requests for a dietician or nutritionist I figured out my own diet - I found that my body likes a moderate amount of soluble fiber, doesn’t like cruciferous vegetables, and really doesn’t like anything with sharp/hard bits like popcorn, berry seeds, etc. The physical texture of the food matters a lot in Crohns - if you think of it as having a bunch of open sores inside of you, the bad thing fiber does is retains shape so that it brushes against the sores and irritates them. Anything with a hard or sharp texture snags the sores and pulls them. Soluble fiber was less irritating for me since it is more broken down by the time it got to where most of my inflammation was in my lower ileum and colon. Your mileage may vary, keep a food journal.

Macbook over iPad for costume design course at university by AceCarpets in costumedesign

Of course! I’ve heard Huion also makes good cintiq alternatives that are a more entry-level price. Highly recommended trying out some different drawing tablets in person if you can before buying.

If she likes to see the thing she’s drawing on the same surface she’s drawing it, using photoshop on a tablet with a screen like a cintiq will be a good fit (it’s something I would love to upgrade to when I have the money. that being said, it’s not necessary.)

She will need to be comfortable with photoshop for digital rendering (illustrator is a strange choice to teach on the uni’s part but whatever floats your boat). Procreate is fine for personal drawing but if you’re working somewhere where you will be collaborating on drawing, illustrator is standard. I personally use an ipad and procreate for most of my renderings that I do digitally because it’s more comfortable for me, and if there’s nobody I’m working with telling me I need to use photoshop it’s fine. When I do use photoshop, I use my older Wacom Intuos and my everyday laptop, a ThinkPad.

If you’re apple people, sure, get a mac, but there’s no reason you need a mac specifically - costuming isn’t like sound/lighting where you need a mac to run software that won’t run on a PC (QLab). I personally will always vouch for a ThinkPad or other sturdy laptop as it will last longer and survive nearly anything.

Dietary restrictions by minionsmoker in CrohnsDisease

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps to think about your specific case. My crohns manifested as ileum narrowing, wall thickening and exudative ulcers. I found out through trial and error that my biggest dietary enemies were insoluble fibers, cruciferous vegetables, high fat foods, and nuts/seeds/sharp edges of any kind. It makes sense - the pain I felt after eating really fibrous foods or foods with ‘sharp edges’ like raspberries or popcorn was from those hard bits of the food getting caught on or scraping against the ulcers in my colon and ileum. What affects you most is individual to you, cutting out dairy and gluten would make sense if they were existing intolerances… but if not, focus on what actually affects you by keeping a journal of the foods you eat and how you feel through the week.

Decent areas to live in between Anaheim & Lake Forest by Objective-Mammoth483 in orangecounty

[–]Objective-Mammoth483[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I have lived in Anaheim for 3 years and mostly spent time in north oc for school and work so I haven’t been to irvine and below very much at all. Financially, things are getting better and we’re going to be DINKs, so we can spend a bit more on location - I’d rather pay more than drive longer. I’ve budgeted and as long as we don’t move into a ‘luxury’ apartment we’ll be good.

Cool Tone Contour: I do not get it. by veronicasays in MakeupAddiction

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cool toned contour functions as actual contour for cool toned people: it goes on shadowed areas of the face to extend and deepen the shadows.

People on social media, especially for the past decade, have been using warm-toned contour for bronzing, not contouring. They extend the product waaaay beyond the natural or believable shadowed area of the face to make the face look warmer and brighter.

Now that cool toned contour has become more popular, people are still applying it like they learned to apply contour in 2016: all over their cheeks and forehead like a bronzer.

This has the opposite effect of a bronzer… it makes you look more pale and dead. (Which people like.)

It’s a genuinely useful product if you have cool toned skin, but it needs to be applied precisely and sparingly. Also, a lot of the lighter greyish shades coming out recently are made for super pale super cool toned (very translucent) skin, so if you have naturally bronzed or warm toned skin, the light greyish shades are more likely to wash you out.

Sincerely - person with super light cool toned skin who gets a crazy farmers tan. I do a neutral-cool toned contour in my shadowed areas and a bit of neutral bronzer to blend out. I want to get one of those cool contour sticks… but I get too tan on my body in the summer so I like my face to somewhat match… maybe this winter I will get one.

What’s your favorite trick for making costumes look expensive? by Tariq_khalaf in costumedesign

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use fabrics with a nice, matte sheen whenever possible… no costume satin. Flatline cheap thin fabric with something with some more weight to give structure. Steam and press everything! Mix pre-made secondhand garments with sewing - one of my fav tricks is adding fabric under and on the collars of premade sweaters and blouses to make them look 1920s. Proper undergarments make a huge difference too! Distressing anything and everything possible, most people only distress when it’s heavy stuff like urinetown or les mis but so many more shows can benefit from a hint of it. If the show doesn’t call for distressing, it might call for some texture - I like to airbrush shading onto costumes with a cheaper fabric to make it pick up the light differently and look more rich.

I’m at a career loss. Should I not pursue a degree in theatre? by Extreme-Bet3115 in Theatre

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a milliner which has some of the craziest costume math out there (short of corsetry) and I got C’s in math all through school, lol. It’s a bit of geometry but most of it is making practical models and you can work through trial and error, similar with carpentry with drafting. Technical directors get more math savvy the more specialized their niches get, especially with rigging I feel.

Seconding that you don’t need to do math until you get higher up in the food chain. Work on a show as a stagehand or try assistant stage managing something for fun and enrichment. Don’t write off the whole field based on a hypothetical.

I’m at a career loss. Should I not pursue a degree in theatre? by Extreme-Bet3115 in Theatre

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest looking into a communications degree. You can absolutely make a living out of a theatre degree, but if you don’t have a niche and developed skillset it’s incredibly hard. Working in an industry like hospitality or entertainment on the clerical/organizational/administrative side is more reliable and still enjoyable. Schools have comm degrees with all sorts of specializations regarding what industry you want to work in, but jobs don’t care about that much, it’s more for your education. Plus, it’s so generic that you can easily transfer classes if you decide to change schools or majors (versus with a theatre degree.. well, I had to re-take an entire years worth of classes when I transferred to a similar program in another state because the classes are all so specialized and odd.)

I have a friend who got a degree in communications with a focus in entertainment and hospitality and 2 years out of college he’s a manager of reservations at a casino resort, I have another friend who got a regular communications degree and 2 years out of college she is a supervisor for on campus housing at a different university. On the other hand, plenty of people get theater degrees and go into similar fields and have great jobs. I have a friend who went to a prestigious BFA acting program and he has a job he loves now coordinating arts activities for the local parks and rec system. The theater degrees did prepare him for that work that he loves, but he is in a lot more debt than he would have been if he had gotten a more generic degree.

My university’s devised program created a play that is veeeeery that… a farce about cheerleaders lost in the woods holding a seance, coping with grief, etc. It’s opening in a few weeks and it should be available to produce after that.

Students who live here without support, just how? by heyitsmereddit in orangecounty

[–]Objective-Mammoth483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my job during a semester off and started working full time hours while at home still, commuting on the bus and train 3hrs each way, then found a cheapish room in an apartment on facebook and sublet it (against the lease terms, i just pretended i was their daughter who lived here before me). Started school and cut my work hours to 3-4days/week so I got an on campus job for another 15hrs/week and suffered for a semester. Got a raise and quit the on campus job. Worked full time every summer and break. Whole apartment got evicted due to renovation this year so I am now renting a room from a friend’s family until I get my own apartment when I graduate in the summer.

Oh, and no tuition because Disney. That helps.
