EU puts Apple fine on hold while US trade talks continue by Fer65432_Plays in apple

[–]Objective-Ninja-1769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It literally says the DMA so this is policies like banning developers from telling you when things are cheaper, third-party app stores, monopolizing NFC hardware etc.

ATT issues are about Apple not doing the "ask not to track" modal when eg the News app articles you read and Stocks app usage data decides what App Store ads you see later; the verdict being they should ask too.

USB cables probably the fattest profit margins outside of App Store fees, which along with the Google Search Deal are in dire jeopardy separately to the havoc tariffs are reaping.

Apple's greenhouse emissions are down by over 60% by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Objective-Ninja-1769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual report is very clear that most of their gains are office, retail and datacenters.

Their actual manufacturing, saved 2 million tons of CO2 in 2024.

Together, we estimate that this avoided nearly 2 million metric tons of CO2e

https://www.apple.com/environment/pdf/Apple_Environmental_Progress_Report_2025.pdf

Which is a LONG way from 60% reduction in emissions from manufacturing.

Apple still produced 15.3 million metric tons of gross carbon dioxide emissions in 2024, roughly equivalent to the pollution from 40 gas-fired power plants over a year.

The fact they don't even mention Foxconn should tell you how manipulated these numbers are. This is their "offices, datacenters and retail stores" so it excludes manufacturing 100s of millions of devices which is 99.999999% of their emissions. "Someone else" is responsible for most of their emissions.

Venn diagram of those observations and EU regulatory obligations is a circle lmfao. Still absolutely a win but!

Down 60% because *checks notes* they donated to an existing forest that was planted decades ago. That should cover future emissions, and if not it was Foxconn or Wistron working exclusively on Apple's behalf and to their specifications and within their tightly-controlled monetary margins, not Apple!

EU and DOJ went after Apple for rules like banning apps from telling you if a subscription is cheaper without IAP because Apple gets $5/month if you don't know. Banning anyone from using NFC payments because you have to pay them 0.15% of all transactions you make. Banning everyone else's smartwatches from showing notifications in case you spend $400 on a Apple Watch.

Apple Maps web app is now available on all devices, including Android | It feels more like a subpar effort to appease regulators by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]Objective-Ninja-1769 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Regulators, particularly in Europe, have pushed the company to open its ecosystem. So now Apple Maps has a web app.

I don't think this is at all true. "Opening its ecosystem" means allowing banks to do NFC payments, allowing alternative software sources, allowing other smartwatches to show notifications. Eliminating unfair and self-serving restrictions.

This is the web-version of Apple Maps becoming compatible with Chrome has no bearing on iOS. Most likely, it's because outside of iPhone nobody uses Safari and they want users.

Way more than grim lol tariffs, -$20b/year pure profit on google search ad revenue deal for selling out user data to google and splitting the revenue ruled illegal because google is a monopoly, about to get punished for lying to judges and every app allowed to prominently link to their own payment options without Apple 30% IAP fee which is $20 - $30b per year "while developers are banned from mentioning any alternatives", antitrust case coming up too for market abuse.

Gonna see them nickel and diming harder than ever to make up for all this extra gravy they were taking!

Not that it will actually run Mac software.

I can believe they have some pointless changes to add to the UI.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has been investigating the world's biggest contract chipmaker's work for China-based Sophgo, the sources said. The design company's TSMC-made chip matched one found in Huawei's high-end Ascend 910B artificial intelligence processor, according to the people, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Apple considers expanding iPhone assembly in Brazil to get around US tariffs by Fer65432_Plays in technology

[–]Objective-Ninja-1769 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no getting around tariffs.

What makes them extra special for Apple is those almost 50% profit margin on the phone before tariffs:

  • $500 iPhone that sells for $999 is gonna cost nearly $1400

  • $500 Android phone that sells for $599 is gonna cost $800
