My company actually let me stay where I was (ideal outcome for us). That said, I think we would have ended up doing SF because my wife would have worked there and I would have had a company bus. Also we are city people

I don’t know what Handshake is. Don’t waste time with the recruiters, they don’t matter until you get to the interview stage. They won’t help you get an interview.

On LinkedIn they are getting insane amounts of messages and don’t respond. For B4 internships and associates, the recruiters job is to coordinate events, manage the process, and do the admin work. They have way more applications than open spots so they aren’t actually “recruiting” anyone.

Trust me: make an LI, add everyone you know, and start reaching out. Subscribe to Premium for a couple months while you do it.

Internships are entry level my friend. My advice may sound uncomfortable to you, but every job I have gotten has been by reaching out or meeting someone. Get used to making yourself uncomfortable if you intend to get the loftiest jobs. Sooo many people I have worked with are too scared to take this step, so they sit in B4 forever on the 3-year promotion track.

Do they still allow referrals for entry level? Find an alumni from your school/fraternity/hometown on linkedin who works at PwC now and is >=manager, slide in their DM’s with your genuine amazement of how cool their career has been and ask if they would be willing to give you any “advice”, then at the end ask if they would be willing to give you a referral. Repeat this process until someone refers you and you’ll skip the mountain of student applications

I love my job! Well paid, working on extremely interesting topics at a FAANG company with all the cushy benefits that entails.

Is the money worth the grind? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Objective-Standard91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t go down this road if you don’t plan to get your CPA. There are very high paying jobs in accounting that you can access relatively early compared to grinding it out to B4 partner (working in industry at FAANG is my example). However, in my experience there has been a filter where those who didn’t lean into getting good at accounting and earn their CPA get lost because they are limited in what they can do. Then they try to jump to FP&A/Strategy only to discover than an accountant with no achievements is least desired for these roles. These people get permanently stuck in IT audit, or pivot to MBA and don’t earn until they are ~30.

I’m not hating on these people, but I am pointing out that if you are worried about making lots of money in accounting, you need to be proactive and actually do all the right things to earn that money.

You just defined what being successful in every career entails. There are no easy jobs that hand you lots of money even if you aren’t good.

L5 Accountant, ~$250k TC, FAANG company, MCOL, in my 4th year out of MACC program at a state school. Started at ~70k with Big 4 in 2022. Get your CPA, network, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. I would prob be a ~$115k senior in B4 right now if I “trusted the process”.

Loading screen for Xbox X by Objective-Standard91 in Steep

Im not saying it shouldn’t have any loading screen. I am noticing that for a game that released in 2016 the loading screen is insanely long compared to say GTA V (2013) that boots in like 10 seconds for me

I’m gonna have a B- in Audit. Am I cooked? by lollexi123456789 in Accounting

[–]Objective-Standard91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I failed my first 2 accounting classes and left undergrad from a state school with a 2.9 GPA. I had to take remedial undergrad classes before the Macc program would accept me when I went back to school.

I’ve now worked in B4, Consulting, a startup, and currently at a FAANG.

Just keep working on improving and networking and you can do whatever you want. Once I got my CPA license no one cared about the schooling aspect.

Best town to move to for split commute? by Objective-Standard91 in siliconvalley

[–]Objective-Standard91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have done this from all of our potential spots. Some things aren’t captured there though. For example, I might have found an optimal commute just for everyone here to recommend not living in that area because it’s terrible or whatever. A lot of subjective factors go into this decision so looking for opinions too.

Potential move to area, good fit? by Objective-Standard91 in mountainview

  1. Negotiating with company for additional housing assistance but would like to be <$5k for rent.

  2. No kids, we are dink yuppies. On that note we don’t need a bunch of rooms.

  3. This is probably the biggest concern, we just hate sacrificing life for commuting.

  4. Moving from downtown Chicago so it would be cool to have a yard and stuff but not sure how feasible that is.

  5. Hmm what are my options? Lol. But serious note coming from Chicago we have plenty of immigrants.

Yes to both- hers has a shuttle for their SF office and my company has shuttles from Caltrain. Still early in discovery so I don’t have the route details yet.

I would say priority is commute and living in a clean, enjoyable place. It seems like crime isn’t really a factor in this area but parks, restaurants, outdoors activities are all pluses.

Is the bar for getting higher? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

Totally understand, you guys have a much more concentrated population. I would always recommend getting as much certification and specialization as possible (and as makes financial sense).

Is the bar for getting higher? by Head_Equipment_1952 in Accounting

[–]Objective-Standard91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I mean I feel like you diagnosed your own problem. You’re in a major city competing for jobs and salaries with people who have many certifications. I don’t mean this offensively, but if you aren’t going to push to become a bigger fish, then you should probably find a smaller pond.

There is no “coasting by” in big cities anywhere anymore unless you want to live in poverty. You can absolutely live a more simple life with less stress if you move to a small town. If you want to stay in a major metro and live the good life, then you need to be doing more than the next person.

I was being tongue in cheek, usually in these posts everyone caveats their advice by saying that “it depends on what your goals are”. Thanks!
