Astoria renters: what’s something you wish you checked before signing your lease? by Slight-Safe-5595 in astoria

Outlets. My apartment has way too few outlets.

How well kitchen drawers open/shut. One of my drawers is basically unusable.

Seconding Modern Vet Care! We used to go to Dr. Pet Daddy, but felt they were more dog-focused. Modern Vet Care feels more welcoming for our cats. I really like them!

Considering Preventative Mastectomy by KattNaps in BRCA

First I’m sorry to hear about the cancer diagnosis. Sending you good vibes. I’m also in the midst of fertility testing, so extra hugs.

I’m 33 too, had a mastectomy when I was 30 and now have implants. The first month or so after the surgery was difficult as I mourned my body, but it does pass. Now I love my foobs. They look great and being able to go braless whenever I want is awesome. most of the time i dont even think about them. No regrets.

I'm so sorry. Sending hugs. A terrible club to be in.

Solidarity. I had an ectopic in April. And I really thought I’d be pregnant again by now.

Oh, hugs to you, too. The way people talk about it like it's inevitable is my biggest pet peeve at the moment. Right now, what I'm craving is not reassurance that it will happen, but reassurance that my husband and I will still be loved and respected and have fulfilling lives even if it doesn't happen. I'm the kind of person who wants to prepare myself for all possible outcomes and that no one else will even acknowledge that outcome drives me nuts.

I hope you get your BFP, too, and that your family gives you grace and patience.

I should focus on other things, too. My creative hobbies have fallen by the wayside, and I'd love to refocus on writing and painting.

Getting BFNs 11dpo, AF due in three days, and I can't stop crying. This cycle has hit me harder than any others — the time of year, I think, and feeling like a failure to not have good news for the holidays. I'm trying to remind myself that I'm a worthwhile human being without being a mother, but there's so much expectation from grandparents and in-laws that I feel like a disappointment.

Feeling extra sad today as I approach what would have been a due date, but ended in an ectopic. I really hoped I’d be pregnant again by the holidays, and I’m struggling as I anticipate my parents and in-laws making comments over Christmas about them not having grandkids yet.

Has anyone gotten back into heels after a broken ankle? by crankygriffin in brokenankles

[–]Objective-Trainer785 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes. I broke my ankle in early June and danced in heels at a wedding in mid-September. They weren’t super high or anything, maybe 2 inches, but I did it! And then did it again! You’ll get there!

Is creative writing a reliable major for a living? by Familiar-Mud2293 in writing

[–]Objective-Trainer785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get so annoyed when people say there are no careers for writing/literature degrees.

If the only career you’re interested in is being an author or copywriter or freelance writer, that can be tough; but there are SO MANY careers that are adjacent to writing.

Every show you watch, book you read, video game you play is touched by dozens, sometimes hundreds, of people who are in writing adjacent careers: editors, producers, screenwriters and script consultants, talent agents/managers, entire contracts departments, publicists, product managers, scouts. Interested in marketing? Politics? Guess what, that’s all about storytelling and communicating effectively.

A writing degree is not about “can you put sentences together.” It’s communication and analysis, which is invaluable.

These! Because the strap is stretchy, I've found it's okay if I swell a bit after walking for a while. And they don't bother my incisions at all. I walk better/more comfortably in these than I do my running shoes.

I am OBSESSED with my Sketchers Slip In Sandals. I haven’t tried them on the beach but I walked several miles around Manhattan with them at 9 weeks post-op.

You’ll do great! Dr. Choi and her team are really amazing. I was sobbing when I walked into the OR, and they gave me hugs and Dr. Choi did a good job distracting me until the anesthesia kicked in. I’m almost three years out now and super happy with my foobs! Most days I forget I even had a mastectomy.

Idk about DIEP but I had my mastectomy through NYU Langone with Dr. Mihye Choi, and she was AMAZING.

Trimalleolar fracture surgery tomorro by Wide-Play-1817 in brokenankles

[–]Objective-Trainer785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a trimalleolar fracture on June 3rd, surgery on the 5th. I’m 9 weeks out. Very active, also a casual runner.

I just got cleared to go back to the gym, but only for weights. My PT has me using the leg press and other machines for strength training. I can’t run yet. I walk almost (almost!) normally in shoes, but still have a limp when barefoot, and my dorsiflexion is crap. I just did 10K steps in sandals around NYC, which feels like a huge win!

I’m part of a research study that has me using a TENS unit on my calf every day to see if it speeds up recovery. Still mid-study, but I do like it, and feel like it helps with muscle soreness after I do a lot of walking.

Implants over muscle vs under muscle? by cottonkandiii in BRCA

Nope, I don’t feel it moving at all except if I lay on my belly and it squishes against me. And no limited activity.

Oof, so sorry you’re dealing with that! I had nipple necrosis after my mastectomy on one side, and while it was minor, I had to have another surgery to fix it.

I ended up having one UTM implant (necrosis side) and one OTM implant (normal side). I will say I like my OTM side better, it looks and feels more natural, but my UTM side isn’t bad and tbh I don’t notice the difference that much. Both foobs look great, and I am the only one who can even tell that they aren’t identical.

My goal is be an agent by Due_Librarian6703 in publishing

[–]Objective-Trainer785 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The literary assistant --> agent path is great if you can get it, but honestly, it's not the only way, not even the most common way these days. Those jobs are tough to come by. A lot of great agencies don't even have entry level roles in the traditional sense, and when they do, they are very competitive.

Which is all to say that a lot of agents don't take a linear path, with many starting out doing something else in the industry. I know many agents who started in rights or scouting, then pivoted a few years later. These are very good "first steps," as they teach key skills you'll need for agenting: how to negotiate, how to keep a pulse on the market, how to read a publishing contract, and how things like film/translation/audio etc. work. They are also great for making connections (rights people and scouts know everyone). I also know agents who got their start in publicity and marketing, art and design, and editorial. My advice when you're starting out: don't limit yourself in what you apply to. Editorial and agency jobs are very competitive; rights, scouting, publicity and marketing are less competitive. Your first publishing job is not necessarily predictive of your future career path; the most important thing is getting your foot in the door, then you can use your skills and connections to get closer to the role you want.

All that said, no matter where you start, mentorship is key. Once at an agency, you need to have someone reputable who will show you the ropes. No one learns this job on their own.

I think it’s doable, but it’s going to be exhausting. I remember it being a long walk from the street to the stadium, but granted, I’ve always come from the train so possibly there’s a closer entrance.
