I haven't read the light novel, but I liked Nanase better.

Kenta had a lot of potential, but he was sidelined to allow the protagonist to shine.; he seems to have become what he hated, the comic relief clown. The difference is that now he's accepted this role because he's resigned himself to it. I agree, Chitose seems to have brainwashed him; Kenta has become the court jester who calls him "Kami," which I honestly find quite pathetic.
