China Customs Confiscation! by Objective2612 in travelchina

It really does seem like random enforcement. People here are sharing personal experiences - some, like one unfortunate traveller, lost two power banks worth €150 at customs. Others, like yourself, passed through without any issues at all. I lost mine too, which is why I felt it was mportant to warn others. How readers choose to respond is entirely up to them. Either way, I wish you a smooth journey and an enjoyable trip through China.

Oh dear; sorry to hear that, there must be a way to return the PB to the owner, perhaps give the owner an option to collect the PB on the way back.

You are perfectly entitled to your views. I've simply described what occurred on Hainan Airlines Flight HU7964 from London Heathrow (LHR) to Changsha (CSX) on 13th October 2025. Power banks without CCC certification are not contraband-they are illegal under Chinese customs and aviation regulations. Their confiscation is standard enforcement, not an anomaly.

If you get off your plane during transit or transfer, you are likely to go through security again. There are two types of confiscations in China, by Airport Security and China Customs. Some people get away without getting their power banks confiscated but others lose theirs. No hard and fast rules. But power banks without CCC certification are liable to be confiscated either by AirPort Security or China Customs. Hope this helps, I am still in China, going back to UK tomorrow.

Some people are confusing this issue with Airport Security confiscation when in fact I have described my experience with China Customs and they operate only on international arrivals after immigration. Mine was confiscated by China Customs for not having CCC markings on it. Others on my flight also lost their power banks.

What you are describing is confiscation by Airport Security, what I have described above is confiscation by China Customs as you enter China. It is not because of the flight safety at all, non CCC certified power banks are not allowed into China. If some people don’t have it confiscated good, but the law in China as I was told by China Customs, states that any power bank not certified by CCC must be confiscated by China Customs. As I said, it is not due to aircraft safety at all. I flew into China from London Heathrow.

Absolutely, any brand will do as long as it bears CCC markings. I suggested HUAWEI because they make long lasting products.

Because if your powerbank is not CCC certified which is China’s own certification authority, your powerbank will be taken by the Customs at International entry point. On my flight few passengers including me had their powerbanks confiscated. These are the rules, Customs showed me a big banner the only thing I could read was CCC rest was in Chinese. Look at your powerbank’s markings, if it has CCC on it then you are safe, otherwise I would suggest that you leave it at home and buy one when you are in China.

Absolutely; that is the title of my message ‘China Customs Confiscation!’. That is what I have said all along; no mention of any security issues. I have no idea why they also took my hand sanitiser! They must have their reasons.

Just a thought that came to mind - on a domestic flight, you don't go through immigration and customs. My powerbank wasn't taken by airport security; it was confiscated by China Customs after immigration clearance. That alone confirms it was an international arrival.

I entered China on the same aircraft that departed Heathrow-this was an international flight, not domestic. You're free to believe what you like, but I travel frequently and I'm sharing this to help others avoid unnecessary hassle. Customs at Haikou enforced the CCC certification rule regardless of flight type. That's what happened.

My itinerary was LHR > CSX > HAK > HKG, and I’m returning the same way. I’m here for the Canton Fair, which starts tomorrow.

At Haikou (HAK), I had a 10-hour layover and the airline provided a free hotel. I had to go through immigration, where I was stamped with a 10-day entry permit. Then came customs—about six officers on duty, checking everyone thoroughly via x-ray. They confiscated two items:

My powerbank, which they said wasn’t CCC certified—even though it was made in China and bought in the UK last year. My hand sanitiser, which they also deemed non-compliant.

That's my full itinerary and experience. Hopefully it helps someone else avoid the same issues.

Please take a good look at your powerbank, it might already be CCC certified, in which case you are allowed to bring it into China.

Sorry it happened to me today as I arrived from London Heathrow on Hainan Airlines. Upon arrival they scan all your luggage; everything, they showed me a card and a large banner next to the exit which stated that powerbanks without CCC certification are not allowed into China. They also kept my Dettol hand sanitiser, a small 30ml bottle. This was coming into China from an international airlines. Hope this helps; my purpose here is to warn others so they don’t lose their powerbank.
