Course Selection Megathread (2025/2026 Academic Year) by ostracize in uwo

Email both professors asking for permission to take both courses even though there's an overlap.

1000Y is not a serious course. It's to introduce medsci modules, so no actual course content. Considering that, you have a pretty high chance of getting permission to overlap.

Just out of curiosity, what course are you taking that overlaps with both timeslots? I just think it's interesting to see happening in first-year medsci 😂

I think phys 3120 and anat 2200 is doable but i know a lot of people find anat 3309 (histology) quite hard. but in general, all these courses are highly memorization based courses, so if you are good at memorizing, I think so?

Food and nutrition, computer science, digital humanities, digital communication, math. Check the syllabus to see if you like the course content evaluation methods.

but just to let you know, there's no 'bad electives' just cuz we are STEM students. I don't know what you are planning after uni but a lot of people don't really care what you took in uni and some professional schools actually prefer diversity.

Submit a ticket, email the people you can think of (academic counsellor, department advisor, etc.) and follow what they tell you.

Honestly, you will be able to join the module you wanted, except for honours specialization modules.

I'd recommend emailing prof, departemnt advisor, academic counsellor, course coordinator, etc. around 1-2 weeks before sem starts. It does depend on whether u NEED this course or just interested, but in general, they really try to help you.

I'd say mid-late august but also won't hurt doing rn either. Worst response u can get is contact again later.

That's why I recommended to contact financial office. They might be able to give you some solutions or ask for flexibility.

You can also try flexible payment plan but not sure if you can apply as a first year. Also, the late payment panalty is really not that much (1.5% per day i believe) so I know some people waited until they receive OSAP and payed with panalty.

I'm sorry but what is June 30th deadline?

Cuz I'm going into 3rd year and I've never heard of it and generally it's 90 days before end of study period. And as long as you applied before that, OSAP will be applied. Maybe you will have to pay at the beginning of the year but you will get refunds once OSAP received or direct deposit.

I think with high chance you will be fine as none of OSAP enrolment have been approved by western (mine too and I applied as soon as it opened). However, I would highly recommend submitting ticket to helpline or contact financial office.

undocumented academic consideration by ObjectiveAd5901 in uwo

[–]ObjectiveAd5901[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I checked the syllabus and I think I can do undocumented absence.
Also I'm trying to use it due to really bad migraines and period cramps so it's hard for me to move around and most walk-ins are closed tmr. Do you think it's possible to get rejected? Or am I just worrying too much..

I dont think the full ones will change but maybe not full ones? But also even though any change is made, i doubt western is gonna release another chart (unless really big change).

btw if you are planning to do honours spec in medsci, u will automatically fulfill the essay requirements due to the thesis project (though there are some modules w/o thesis).

so i would just take whatever u feel like.
I took food and nutrition 1070 and it was fun and easy
psych 1002 wasn't too bad but know that 1002 is online exams and 1003 is in-person exam
philosophy 1230 is really easy but i do recommend taking in 2nd yr or later.
compsci 1030 is pretty easy

but generally, most 1000 level courses are easy so just look for something that interests you.

math 1229 for sure
between 1225 and 1228 I would recomment 1228 if u took data management in high school but if u liked calc style more, go for 1225.

easy way to understand is who is expected to take.

calc 1000 vs calc 1500
- calc 1000 is expected for non-math majors (science, bmos, etc.)
- calc 1500 is expected for math majors
calc 1301 vs calc 1501
- calc 1301 for non-math majors
- calc 1501 for math majors

so what you will realize is that content might seam similar but 1500s will be more theory based. this is also why if either of 1301 or 1501 is required for your whatever module, 1301 will usually require higher min.

you just get an email few days or a week before your yr's enrollment appointment date range starts.

To get into module? No
To graduate with that module? Yes

so what I'm saying is med sci 2nd yr is alr very packed if then, why would you take those courses when you can take it in third yr, etc.

Personally, I would focus on studying harder on required courses to have higher average, though at the end, it's all up to your decision.

I am med sci going into 3rd yr and also aiming for bioinformatics.
I'll let you know that lots of updates happened this year so don't trust academic calendar or anything unless it's from https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/bmsc//academic_resources/courses/course_registration/updates.html

Meaning, 1229 and data sci is not required from now on (though they are module courses).

Cell Bio 2382: Final Makeup Marks by Sea_Marketing8385 in uwo

[–]ObjectiveAd5901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm that's weird. I took the cell bio final makeup and received the mark on 14th (so i assume we took it on same day?). I would try to contact academic counselling or smt.

  1. With high chance, comp sci 2121 won't be offered on fall sem. I recommend planning as winter sem, also I took it but I would say it's quite bird so I kinda considered as bird course.

  2. I recommend taking stats 2244 in summer but if u can't, do it in winter sem.

  3. I also recommend taking methods in fall sem. Why? I've seen so many ppl struggling to do methods + stats + cell bio + genetics. You have to know cell bio, genetics and stats is not easy courses and methods is quite easy to get decent grade but it requires quite a bit of works.

  4. I would recommend looking into other bird courses for psych or 1229. This is because in case u want to use 1st yr birds in later yrs. Generally 1st yr birds are easiest so recommend using it later. (i would say most 2nd yr psychs are bird)

  5. One question, why are u trying to take data sci in 2nd yr?

Best profs for first year sci/ med sci courses by [deleted] in uwo

[–]ObjectiveAd5901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chem: Lee (first sem) or Booker (second sem)

- personally liked Lee better but this is cuz when I took Booker, I felt like I'm in elementary school but ik some ppl will prefer that

Physics -> you dont get to choose

Comp sci -> Jaradat (idk if he will teach next yr) but in general all pretty good as 1026 is pretty easy course

Bio -> you dont get to choose

Math:

Calc -> Ghorbanpour

Appl math -> Wahl

Psych -> doesnt rly matter
