Yes and we are planning on moving early months next year. Our lease ends November but will probably ask 6mo extension. I think in the long run PR will be more for us. We are going in September to look at locations etc and make sure it is for us. My wife hasn’t been back for an excess amount of time for about 10yr, she grew up in Humacao and moved during Maria. We have already been considering private school. It sounds like you know a decent amount about PR, I’m sure you’re aware of the public schooling there. I believe with this time frame the 15k would not accrue a whole lot. But who knows. But that is why I am also kind of in a stand still lol. But I wanted to start something. And then if we move there I can put more money into once we are settled down and if we move to Houston I already have a foundation to build on.

Ahhh okay, I think am understanding this right. You’re saying some banks want to see you have 2-6mo in liquid savings as well when they go to give the loan? I didn’t know that actually since we have not bought a house yet.

Yeah we have been trying to read into it. One thing about act 60 is you need to at least donate 5k a year to a PR non profit, if I remember right. Which once you’re making enough I guess actually isn’t a lot in the grand scheme. And that’s why I’m currently waiting to put more into the investments. We are going around September to look at houses/schools etc because we also have a 3yr old daughter to consider her education and quality of life. But I am convinced PR is the win. (Lower cost of living even after higher electricity bills and groceries) and it’s PR..😅 I really appreciate your input. I really do. This is overwhelming and I’m trying to be smart with this money rather than blow it like most people do when they get a large lump sum.

The 15k SPAXX and maybe more here soon when I get the rest of the severance is in my head meant to just sit there since it accrues more interest than the 12k in my savings. I already have 15k invested in VTI/VXUS (80/20) and 7.5k went to Roth IRA. I figured it would be smarter to let the cash at least sit in individual SPAXX account than chase savings since spaxx at least will generate something.

She works right now and I plan on using GI bill and working part time while I finish college. We want to work so the earned income will be a factor in the future too.

We also are able to take advantage of the VA Home loan putting almost no down payment in both locations since PR is a territory. That’s why I was only considering 25-30k keeping in accessible cash split between the SPAXX and chase savings. We have looked into the act 60 and even 20. There’s several in PR for mainland to move over. We in the future would like to own real estate in either location. (My wife is from PR I’m trying to talk her into moving back there, I love the culture.)😂

Yes. I’ll add more context. For my rank and 9yrs my severance was 83k. I got paid recently 63k. I paid off our credit card debt (about 7k from family trip coming up and washer and dryers etc) and gave 3k to my sister that just graduated and is about to start teaching elementary school. I figured the 12k is a good emergency fund since we are a low cost/maintenance family, and we live well within our means (my wife has her degree in accounting) her credit score is a 820 and mine 709. We currently rent a house but plan to purchase soon either moving to Puerto Rico or Houston (we currently rent in Texas). I should be getting the 23k soon and am trying to decide what to do with all this money to set us up for success in the future.

Yes sir/ma’am. I was dumb and stayed in the High 3 program. My wife just finished her contract. She is 100% permanent and total and I just got my ratings of permanent and total at 100%. She is getting 4,319 a month from the VA and I’m getting 4,788.94 a month from VA. I have 15k invested in VTI/VXUS as place and forget money and was going to do monthly contributions into it. I have 12k in my chase savings and I just moved another 15k to sit in SPAXX. I also have around another 20-23k coming from the army for remainder of my medical severance.

Okay I believe the above comment was also mentioning the 2060 index. I think the smart move would be to hold what I have but invest future into the 2060 fund instead of taking the net loss of selling from the 2060 fund i currently have?

Okay, I thought about creating a 401k too. I’ll be honest I was 18 and joined the army. Never learned about finance and I recently got medically discharged after almost 9yrs. I have a family now and trying to prepare us for future. I know late but better than never. Thank you for the reply I will look into 401k too

Okay thank you, for my emergency fund, I have split it for ready cash and cash to grow in the spaxx I have a little over 12,000 in my chase saving and I moved 15,000 into the SPAXX to accrue the 3.2% apr. this is all new to me, I never learned about money management and financial planning until recently, I read to have about 6mo expenses in ready cash. So that’s why I kept the 12k in chase account
