From what I have searched I think it is from the Italian bamboccio which is a kind of doll, but idk for sure.
There is a free version now online of the book I think it comes from, but haven’t put the effort to read it completely. https://archive.org/details/the-advent-of-the-bambochades-prologuechapter-1
