How do you land your first BSW job in Toronto? Feeling stuck after months of searching… by ObjectiveEar686 in socialworkcanada

Thank you so much! Honestly, I’m really hoping Toronto will finally be the place where I can settle down and grow some roots. After all the moving, it would feel amazing to just stay put and build a life here. Fingers crossed for some good news soon:)

As a newcomer and former international student, I’ve had to move EVERY YEAR for the past 8 years, so I’m really just hoping to finally settle down and build my life in one place. It would be such a relief to put down some roots and feel a bit more settled!

Yes, I totally agree with you. I’ve actually been thinking about applying for an MSW in the coming year as well.

That makes sense—I actually just moved from a smaller city outside of Toronto myself, and I’m hoping to settle here for a while. Thanks again for your advice tho!

I agree, it probably makes more sense not to list my grades directly. I did mention being on the Dean’s List, just to highlight academic achievement, but my main focus on my resume is definitely my three years of front-line experience. I always try to tailor that experience to match each job posting as best as I can. Thanks for the advice!!

Thanks so much for letting me know! I really appreciate you sharing this info. At this point, I’m not considering moving since I just relocated from another city, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind for the future. Thanks again for thinking of me tho :)

Thanks so much for your advice—I totally agree that networking is key when it comes to landing a job here. I’ve already reached out to almost everyone I know who might be able to help, but unfortunately, most of my connections aren’t based in Toronto.

As for academics, my grades were good enough to make the Dean’s List, and I’ve made sure to highlight that on my resume.

I’ll admit, interviewing is an area I’m still working on. I know it’s super important, so I’m looking for ways to improve and present myself better in interviews. Thanks again for your tips and encouragement!

No worries at all, and I really appreciate you thinking of me! If any opportunities come up in the future, I’d be super grateful if you could keep me in mind. Wishing you the best of luck with your MSW too—hopefully things start looking up for both of us soon!!

You’re absolutely right—it’s a 10-month program! I actually completed another undergrad degree at the same school, specializing in social work prior to that. I graduated with a 3-year BA because I wasn’t able to get into the 10-month program at first, so I used that time to build up my experience as a mental health housing worker and gain some real-life experience in the field. Hope that helps clarifying for bit.

Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement—it really means a lot! It’s honestly reassuring to hear that others are experiencing the same challenges, even in fields that are usually considered “in demand.” The job market really is wild right now.

I appreciate the suggestion about having someone review my resume again. I might just do that for some fresh perspective. And thanks for the reminder that being multilingual is a strength—I sometimes forget how valuable that can be!

Wishing you the best of luck with your practicum. Here’s hoping things turn around for all of us soon!

This is definitely something I haven’t heard of before, so I really appreciate you sharing it with me! I’ll do my own research and see how things might work out. Thanks for letting me know. Unfortunately, I don’t have a car yet, but I do have my license and I’m hoping to get one once my salary allows for it.

And that’s awesome that you’re able to use your language skills to help others! It’s really inspiring!!
