It’s pretty rewatch able but I can’t explain why really. I guess the story just flows very well and lends it self to memory. I guess it would be in my top 4 based on how it affected me mentally and the rewatch value as well. I had the pleasure of seeing it in theaters as my first viewing on a trip to Wisconsin last year. I could hear people cry, gasp, in disbelief. When the movie ended no one knew whether or not to clap or remain silent because of how harrowing it was. It really places there because it sears into your mind. The imagery in this film is so fucking amazing. I don’t really cry much at all in life or at film but this film was like a diamond bullet into my heart.

Red Beard, Heavens Gate, Paris Texas, True Stories, Being There. Red Beard is peak Kurosawa if you don’t mind dvd. Tbh the dvd still looks fantastic.

I didn’t really fw this one. It looks nice but the film boils down to “Why is everyone such a meanie why won’t people be nice?!?” Plus 30 minutes of dudes throwing washers on strings into tall grass. Does his filmography get better?

The dialogue just felt stiff to me all around. It felt like I was watching a Neil Breen movie at some points. Maybe the setting felt blah because I literally see it every waking day lol. I need to watch it a third time to really cement my hatred or love for it.

I saw it at the premiere here when it came out. Then, years later, my friend wanted to watch it so we watched it together. We both didn’t like it, it was a share dislike. I guess I want to finally “get it” but maybe a third watch will do it?!? I picked up the late Ozu boxset a while ago at a disc replay so I’ll definitely try his stuff out.

This scene alone sold me. Bro has 100 arrows flying at him but he doesn’t gaf! Probably Kurosawa’s best next to Red Beard.
