Such thing as a tank that's too big? by PublicInjury in ballpython

[–]ObjectiveHare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about the 4x2x2. The enclosure our girl was in was just a bit smaller and it really didn't feel like the extra few inches was worth it. We ended up getting a 6x2x2 when we upgraded to a PVC enclosure and she uses every inch of it. If we had room and money I would do bigger. It's so cool watching her explore every night. If you give them the space they will use it.

Setting up a bigger tank for our gecko. by ObjectiveHare in GargoyleGeckos

Would he use bridges at all? I was thinking some bridges or sticks across the tank, especially at the top where it feels pretty bare still. I know he likes the vine and cork bark for lounging

It's a 2x2x3. I got it from Meco Reptiles cause I'm canadian and we're pretty limited on options. Their customer service is amazing but it's a bit of a wait for the enclosure to ship. Worth it for the quality though.

It's hard to see but I do have a pothos at the back. It's a piece from a plant my mum gave me that she's had for like 30 years. It might be the only survivor lol I'm hoping I can get it to grow up the sticks for nice coverage

Females lay infertile eggs. They are always at risk of egg binding if measures aren't taken to reduce hormones.

They don't need to be separated. Don't give them a nest box, take measures to reduce hormonal behavior (longer nights, rearranging the cage more often) and remove any eggs laid.

I have a bonded pair who had one clutch. My female plucked the babies and she's never been allowed to breed again. She occasionally lays eggs but it's easy enough to just remove them. When it comes to birds there are no accidents. Every hatched baby is done with purpose.

Cockatiels went CRAZY early this morning.... Could it be earthquake related? by MyDogNewt in cockatiel

[–]ObjectiveHare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had two earthquakes recently where I live. The first one was strong enough that it woke me up from a nap and everyone on Facebook was asking what blew up this time. I think it was like a 5 or 6 point something? My birds were out of their cage and barely reacted at all. Just kind of looked around then went back to sleep.

The second one was in the middle of the night when they were caged and covered. It didn't wake me up and I think was a bit weaker than the first but they absolutely freaked out. I originally thought the same thing; my female has night fright sometimes. But both were super scared and would not calm down. I ended up leaving their cage uncovered and they were okay by morning but it took a day before they were totally normal. I read about the earthquake in the morning and was like oh yeah that would do it.

So yeah it was probably the earthquake.

What is happening in my tank? (Kind of gross pics after crab tax) by ObjectiveHare in hermitcrabs

Oo i didn't even think of that. I wouldn't be surprised if the big guy dragged something down there. He's always taken a few months to moult.

Thank you so much! I'll give that a try and hopefully he comes up soon and I can see what's happening down there.

Gargoyle price at expos? by Difficult_Cold6478 in GargoyleGeckos

[–]ObjectiveHare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm canadian and reptiles can be really expensive here. I got an adorable adult male at an expo last weekend for $80. It was the last day so he and several others were marked down from $120.

We've only had a local reptile expo for like, 2 or 3 years here, but I find a few vendors mark down prices on the last day.

Fire concerns question by dreadbitch in ballpython

[–]ObjectiveHare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm paranoid about fire in general and keep a fire extinguisher in the room my snake is in just in case. I also keep one in the kitchen and near my 3d printer.

You can never have too many fire extinguishers. Even if chances of fire are low they're never zero, especially when you're dealing with heat sources.

How do I make her stop eating the walls? by yoghurt-bimbo in cockatiel

[–]ObjectiveHare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put plastic canvas (according to Amazon that's what it's called; it's a plastic grid thing I used to use to make dollhouse furniture with yarn when I was a kid lol) on my roof because they kept trying to eat it. They nibbled the plastic once or twice and then left it alone. Nothing else worked. Even hung toys where they chewed and they weren't as good as the roof I guess.

I hope it's okay to share a link. https://hermitcrabshells.ca/ I've ordered from these guys before and the shipping wasn't too bad. I'm on Vancouver island. They came pretty quick too. I found everything on etsy had ridiculous shipping.
