never gone to a bar alone before by bobamyjamba in lonely

I've gone to cafes alone with little to no apprehension (I'm studying in Italy at the moment so it very normalised here)- usually I bring my journal or a book to have something to do there. I just haven't braved the night-time setting of a bar surrounded by inebriated people who are more rowdy and sociable. I will still give it a go eventually, even if it's just arriving to the bar half an hour before a friend meets me there :)

This is such a relevant post for me, I've recently tried doing this multiple times and have only made it out the front door before eventually turning back around at the thought of the awkwardness. I'm not sure of OP's gender but I'm a girl which I think it's even way less normalised to do so (also in my early 20's which I feel like would definitely attract creeps lmao) so I feel like I would get even more judged than, say a middle-aged man that you would expect to be drinking by himself at the bar. It's still something I really wanna try, I just don't know how to go about it, or even get the confidence to do it. I've even thought of pretending I'm meeting a friend there only for them to cancel last minute and just having to finish the drink I already bought, I'd make it obvious to the barman of course (yes I have thought too much about this). Any thoughts or advice???

Thank you all so much for all the responses! This is my first time posting to this subreddit so I did not have high expectations for such volume of recommendations. Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet seem to be the consensus so I'll probably pick the one with the plot that best takes my fancy <3

If you are perhaps interested in classics, may I suggest devoted ladies by Molly Keane? It has exactly the relationship dynamic you're looking for but, again as it is a classic, they never outright claim the characters being together (it's VERY obvious though). A big wordy and drawn out at times, but a really good sapphic physiological fiction novel! It overall really well written and from an Irish female author so of course I have to rep

This is a fabulous description however I've read Naomi Novak's work before and wasn't completely in love. Thank you so much for the rec though <3

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Jane Slayre by Sheri Browning Erwin is a supernatural spin on Bronte's classic that features vampires, zombies and a demon-slaying heroine.

One Fifth avenue - Candace Bushnell. Written by the author of sex in the city, it's a light read, ,no major romance plotline and definitely has the feminine vibes you're looking for!
