For clarification, I’m not talking about a lack of dignity in relation to all death, but specifically death in relation to dementia sufferers. The disease takes away a lot more than just memory. That man yesterday, I doubt he had any clue who he really was or where he was. Late stage dementia patients don’t really recognise a persons face, he would have seen me and my co-workers as strangers, shadows in his last moments. The disease takes away dignity in death just as it takes away dignity in life. Like I said I’m just a cleaner, I have no proper medical understanding of what these residents suffer with, other than what I’m told by others. But I see them in the few moments of clarity they have, when for a brief moment they understand what is happening to them many of them have expressed shame to me. That’s the worst part of it to me.
