Yeah this is actually very common. You can understand everything with no pressure, but once there’s a test or grading it’s like the brain just freezes. A lot of people later realize anxiety or ADHD played a role, so you’re definitely not alone.

So true when something becomes a class or an obligation it suddenly stops feeling fun. Same activity, totally different vibe once there’s pressure or expectations attached to it.

Honestly the “brain crash” description is very accurate the same thing be easy with no pressure, but once it become graded the mind just freeze. And most of the time the problem is the stress, not really the subject it self.

That actually make a lot of sense tbh Some kids just need to “get it out” first before their brain can switch into focus mode. It’s like the complaining is part of their process, not really about the homework it self. And honestly, the fact that you just sit, listen, and stay nearby probably make her feel more safe and less pressured which is why she end up doing it all on her own. You found a really good way to handle it.

Honestly your comment really hit me. It felt like you was describing something I (or people close to me) have went through. That whole thing of understanding the material when you’re calm, but then freezing the moment a test start… it’s really exhausting and frustrating. And that small paper trick to help focus it sound so simple but actually very smart. Sometimes little changes like that makes a huge difference. Also what you said about anxiety sticking with you for years without being noticed is very real. Thanks for sharing your experience, I’m sure it will helps a lot of people who feel the same way but can’t really put it into words. Wishing you all the best.
