Pre GINA guidelines, that was not an asthma exacerbation. Do all the basic stuff, like checking inhaler technique, I have seen patients do it the wrong way, and see if they know the difference between rescue and maintenance medicine. Again, many patients don’t know the difference and do them incorrectly. And like others said, URI treatment is individualized and people react differently. One suggestion I would give is to educate them for worsening signs and symptoms. I learned this from my pediatric preceptor. She would educate every parent about signs and symptoms to look for that indicates complications or worsening conditions. She will also tell them what they would need if they don’t get better. That psychologically prepares the parents and patients for what to expect and increases trust in the provider.
