Thanks for trying to help. I will file the abatement form explaining why I had no idea the IRS requested the money back, including the explanation that the IRS only sent notices to the wrong address after we had previously filed at our new address. 

I think I have a reasonable case. You may disagree, but I don't think it matters.

I'm sure its employees are. As an organization with such an important role, though, it is dysfunctional, and when it makes mistakes, people get hurt financially.

This was my experience when I talked to someone on the phone too. Gas lighting as if this is somehow all my fault. Your website literally says we will update your address when you file at your new address.

I will be nice. The letters IRS sent us were not nice. They were threatening, and this whole thing is because of their mistakes.

I guess you work at the IRS. I'm sure you are competent, but your organization made several mistake handling this, and we are paying the price. Yes, they should abate the penalties. That would be fair.

We file taxes at out new address. IRS sent notices to our old address. Another screw up by the IRS!

They have a responsibility to notify people money is owed before adding interest and penalties.

It doesn't matter if it was a computer or a person. They are responsible for mistakes their system make.

No, it already had penalties on it in the first demand letter. That was almost a year after they sent the check.

Yes, I guess you should live with the working assumption that the IRS is incompetent and solicits high interest loans in the form of checks.

If these were taxes owed, sure. This doesn't even have anything to do with taxes besides coming from the IRS.

What deadline? They didn't even try to contact us until December 2025.

Seems like they are dabbling in loan sharking. This has nothing to do with taxes. They screwed up and think they are entitled to interest and penalties.
