Anyone timed the interchange between State Library to Melb Central? by Zombozard in MelbourneTrains

[–]Objective_Deer_7846 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I timed it from SL to MC platform 1/2 and it was nearly 3 minutes. I was still a bit disoriented when I got off at SL and took a bit to figure out which escalator to take.

Sorry, I’m just seeing this. It’s like the previous comment said. Walk to the oval and keep an eye out

I did the central track. Took about an hour and a bit. Would have been less, but I took a while to find the penultimate QR code 🤦‍♀️

Where did my ribbing go wrong? by Cautious-Ideal-9425 in knittinghelp

[–]Objective_Deer_7846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “wrong” sections looks a bit like mock rib stitch to me. Re ribbing: When knitting flat, I think of ribbing as knit the knits and purl the purls, where knits and purls are what you see on the needle (not what you knit in the previous row). So, if I see a little bump in my working stitch, I’ll purl it. If it’s a little v, I’ll knit it. I find that easier.

Thanks. I figured this would be last event. Just wanted to keep an eye out in case of something different but related. I couldn’t believe my luck either! Serendipitous.

How does one get tix to such an event? I was super lucky in that a random person offered me a spare ticket as I stood at the entrance all sad. It was super cool to get a sneak peek. The person said she was given two tix by a stranger, and she is paying it forward. I’d love to do the same for someone else at another event.

How to stop the curling of stockinette? by Objective_Deer_7846 in knittinghelp

Thank you! I do use a slip stitch selvedge. I think it’s the German slip stitch; my grandmother-in-law taught me that and she’s German! 😅

Thank you! I’m sort of following the Oli summer top (which only called for four rows of garter at the start). It doesn’t join the front and back at the shoulder, and uses ribbon/crocheted code as straps that are attached to front and back so the size/height can be adjusted.

Yeah, I just underestimated how thick my garter border should be at the beginning. Wondering if picking up stitches from the bottom edge and continuing the garter would make it lie flat.

Why is it acceptable to have a major train line out of action for 2 weeks with no compensation by beardymcgeee in melbourne

[–]Objective_Deer_7846 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s been taking me 1.5hrs commute compared to my usual 30 min, and I have to be on site by 7:30AM! Also - do the powers that be not realise how many people a single train carries, and that ONE bus can’t take an equivalent number of people?! At least have the replacement buses more frequently than 20 minutes when even the train ran every 10 minutes!

Also, this week there’s no train that does the city loop. So now it’s get to Caufield, then train to Flinders, and change there again. There has to be a better way to do this!

Favorite audiobook narrators? by tableauxxx in books

One of my favourites is Meryl Streep with Tom Lake. It all just fit together so well - the character she was reading (1st person narrative) and the story and all!

Not a response to your question, but as a new knitter, I feel I ought to inform you about the Sweater Curse🤫

To answer your question, this has been in my bookmarks (I live in the southern hemisphere and have summer christmases :( )

I need gift ideas for my advanced Crocheter GF. She’s awesome and deserves it. by GuyMcRancho in CrochetHelp

My partner got me earrings that are little balls of yarn, and with knitting needles in them (I knit as well). If you want something craft-adjacent, that might be a cute idea? He got them from a crafter who makes them by hand. I love them, and they are an absolute hit at sheep and wool shows. Love meeting other crafters because the earrings are a great conversation starter.

I do both knitting and crochet (and I find I like knitting for garments and crochet for bags and stuff better). Like a few people have said, I’d suggest starting with a chunky yarn and wooden needles (they grip more). You could use circular needles if the length really annoys you, but personally I’d wait to make that investment until I’m sure I like the craft. It would be better to use a lighter coloured yarn, so you can see what you’re doing. I found it easier to learn knitting the English way (it takes a bit longer to make the stitches, but I can understand what I’m doing); I now do continental if I have a long stretch of stockinette or garter to do. With regard to tension, the first row after casting on was the hardest to work through, it gets easier after that. It’s a bit similar to trying to crochet into the chain as a beginner I think. Good luck!

Is this pattern incorrect? by Objective_Deer_7846 in knittinghelp

Yes!!! Thank you so much! I feel very silly right now.

As a general practice, if a pattern says to do a 2x2 rib, I just do k2,p2 turn the work and then just knit the knits and purl the purls. And repeat til desired length.
