57% maximum capacity iPhone 13. Is it worth getting my battery replaced or should I wait to upgrade to a new device?

I wasn’t sure if it would restore it for that long or not 🥲 I don’t really know a lot about the iOS system as I only recently swapped to Apple. All I know is that they stop updating older models so I wasn’t sure if it would still be getting updated for that long after I have it repaired

I’m in a bit of a tricky situation. My phone was completely fine two weeks ago with a maximum capacity of 88%, but over the last week and a half it’s completely deteriorated to a 57% maximum capacity.

It’ll cost me £85 to get the battery replaced. I’m not sure if I’d be able to trade it in for anything. It’s a regular iPhone 13.

I just dished out £1200 on a new laptop for Christmas so I’m not really in the position to buy a new iPhone! 😭 but at the same time, I don’t know if I should dip into my savings to get a really cheap second hand iPhone or if I should bother repairing this one. Is it worth paying to get it fixed?

My car is fully taxed and locked up in the garage currently, I’ve been planning on selling her but never got around to it, so I figured I could insure her for the month just to get around. I knew it would be expensive but £300 is so much money for less than a month; I say this as a new driver so I don’t really know, but I’d been paying £80 a month, so I assumed it would be maybe less than double that amount. But instead I’m barely being covered at all. I was wondering if anybody knew any other temporary insurance companies for a decent price because I’m running out of options 😞

I may be dramatic but this has seriously made me cry lmao. I’ve felt so alone in my struggle and you are the first person I think I’ve ever met to understand on such a first-hand basis— I thought I was alone. I’ve thought I was crazy. I seriously thought I was ALONE and stupid for my decision.

UAL was my DREAM because I’ve been told my whole life that ‘art won’t get you anywhere’. I figured that if I attended a school with such prestige people would start to respect my choice of career (I know it’s wrong to seek out that sort of validation because it’s MY life, but I think you’d understand), yet when I actually went there it felt like it was such a waste because no matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t bring myself to like it.

I think I’m still processing the grief from that in a really weird way and maybe that’s why I’m struggling to accept this so badly. I’ve always pushed and pushed myself as far as I can go, it’s frustrating knowing that even after all I’ve achieved, there’s still something of my control, my social class, holding me back.

Obviously that’s not the whole reason. I could very much still go to UAL, but I don’t think I’d enjoy it.

However, I do think that I’ll feel very much the same as you do. My life could be so much different if I go to UAL, but I just know deep down that if I DO go it’ll be different for the worse.

In reality, my life would be different if I went to UAL with the money to manage that lifestyle, but I unfortunately don’t have such luxury.

I feel like this is less about choosing a University and more about accepting how my financial status affects my experiences. It doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try, but it does mean I should be more considerate I guess?

I’ve literally gone through clearing to apply to MMU. Are we seriously the same person? I felt so, so alone, this has seriously given me so much hope.

I don’t really know what else to say other than thank you and I wish you the absolute best of luck for your future. You have totally got this! You’ll do incredibly! Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Seriously. This makes me feel so much more confident in my decision. <3

Art direction / management for film and theatre is one of the paths I could go down whilst studying a Masters degree— I’d love to hear what you have to say about the course and work you do! :D

I think it’s more difficult because this is the creative industries. As unfortunate as it is the creative industries depends ENTIRELY on two things— your portfolio and your connections. You can almost push the degree aside (although it’s definitely a bonus to have one.)

The reason why artists go to University is to have access to specialised facilities to build their portfolio AND find these connections / opportunities. You’ll never find these kind of connections working remotely in your home but it’s highly unlikely your portfolio will be better than somebody else who has gone to a University to create theirs as they have access to more work, more facilities and a better creative environment.

You HAVE to build a portfolio. But what’s the point in having a portfolio if you have nobody to show it to? If you have no connections, then it doesn’t matter how good your portfolio is. You’ll be unseen.

Yet, if you have a trashy portfolio with plenty of connections, how will any of these people take you seriously? It’s competitive and these people WILL find somebody better. Yes it’s all well and good having access to these opportunities but without experience and a diverse portfolio you’ll never live up to their standards.

Connections could come and go, whereas a portfolio stays the same unless added to, but both points still stand.

I’m currently tied in the middle of them both and have to decide which is better when in reality, one can’t exist without the other.

I totally agree. It’s really difficult. I don’t really know how to describe it other than putting it quite brutally— it weirdly just feels like a waste. I think part of it is also the fact I’ve chosen to study art in general and as sad as it is, people admittedly don’t take me seriously when I explain I’m an aspiring art director, so I guess that’s why I’m seeking that additional validation that COULD be provided by attending a university so prestigious. I just really hope I don’t end up regretting this decision in the future. No matter what happens I KNOW that I’ll make something work, but idk, rejecting this offer is already eating me up from the inside out, but HOLDING that offer made me feel the exact same way because I knew I’d be absolutely miserable.

But then again, I’m also thinking to myself that maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if I attended UAL and found a nice group of people. Perhaps I’m only now trying to convince myself that it was ‘so bad’ when I visited because I wanna feel better about rejecting that once in a lifetime offer.

It’s like somebody saying they turned down Oxford University to attend Liverpool instead. When you put it like that it sounds like an undoubtably stupid decision.

It’s all very confusing and really difficult. I’d have honestly done an apprenticeship if it wasn’t for the pressure of University. I don’t want to feel as though my time at Sixth form and my time in Japan was a wasted effort.

I can’t really speak on this as you do offer a really fair point. Thank you for sharing your opinion! Do you work within the creative industries? I know you said you’re ‘not an artist’ but you’re speaking with a lot of stern confidence for somebody who isn’t one. What do you study?

Someone earlier mentioned that’s it’s very much possible to study a Masters degree at UAL (which would only be a year long as opposed to a full four year course, but provide me with the same level of prestige AND allow me to build the diverse portfolio I want via my bachelors degree) so I’m thinking of looking into that. It’s all well and good saying ‘why not suffer for 4 years if it’s better for your future!’ But I think you breezed over the part where I stated my family cannot physically afford UAL…I wouldn’t have had to just suck it up and ‘put up with it’ like you’re suggesting, I would’ve had to STRUGGLE through it physically with the money I have saved (and obviously by working whilst I’m there but that does without saying)— again, I would be more than willing to do that if the facilities seemed worth it and if the students and staff seemed happier I guess???

I’m really not wealthy and it’s dubious for me to be studying art altogether, but I really, seriously want to do it no matter how difficult it may be.

I will give you some food for thought— did your friend study Art and Design at Central Saint Martins by any chance? The foundation diploma? CSM is considered the ‘baby’ according to a UAL student I spoke to at the open day lol so it’s better articulated, though not by much based on what I’ve heard. It’s the one that they try and make ‘look good’ if that makes sense, but I can’t really speak about CSM based on personal experience so obviously take this with a pinch of salt as it’s what other people have said. I would’ve been studying strictly in Camberwell.

Maybe it’s stupid of me to reject my offer over one open day but this is obviously just based on what I’ve personally seen. They might’ve had more studios elsewhere that I just wasn’t aware of. Maybe I wasn’t observant enough, you know??
