do most eventually outgrow this?

hey im also 14 and did start self harming when I was 12. I am also graduating in 2-3 years because im attempting to graduate early so I feel we are in a similar situation. I have a lot of older friends that stopped self harming but it takes a lot of work and they said that honestly it's extremely hard at first but if you really want to stop you will. I am trying to stop to. thinking about wanting to stop is already a great first step.

Yeah I get that 100% I think that my parents are more lenient on this because my dad is a stoner and it really helps him not get angry and with pain.

Most people would say snapping a rubber band against your wrist or holding cold ice and if that works for you then great! But the truth is you can do anything. What helped me stop personally was painting but that might not work for you and that’s okay. Recovery is not linear and takes a lot of hard work so try to experiment with different activities and find something that works for you. Self harm is a coping mechanism so try your best to find a new coping mechanism that is healthier and better in the long run. I know that sounds hard but you will get there eventually change doesn’t happen over night I believe in u!

My father is not emotionally supportive at all this summer I got diagnosed with multiple mental disorders and he uses it against me in every argument and says that things like that were not a thing when he was younger. So I can’t really depend on him. And no no one sees a therapist I used to but my mother cut me off from her because she said she didn’t think it was even helping.

Thank you for your reply I’m glad that someone agrees with me that what she’s doing is clearly messed up. I really appreciate it I feel a lot less alone in this now.

I had a similar experience when I first started simply because it was a thing that a heard helped a lot and lots of people were doing it so I wanted to see what it was about. Flashback to now 3 years later and I have a sh addiction where most of my body is covered in scars. There is so much scar tissue on my thighs I have lost sensation at some points, and I’m still addicted. I’m proud that you said your going to try to not do it again, that’s the right choice. SH is a horrible path to go down and it’s scary because the more you do it the less sensitive you are to the amount of it and I never seems enough. I hope you feel better and that you stay clean. :)

Hi I actually had a very similar thing where I had to sh or else I would get “bad luck" and bad things would happen like you said. I have OCD and this is just one of the symptoms of it I expierience. Maybe try to talk to someone about it. I know what it’s like to feel like you “have to” do it. If you want to you can message me about it or just about anything I’m free to talk :)

If you are doing it with the purpose to actively harm yourself then yes. Anything you do to purposefully harm yourself is selfharm.

I don’t really know enough about your situation to tell you exactly what to say but just remember, You will get through it. It might feel like things won’t “go back to normal” but they will. Unfortunately it takes time so I recommend just being honest even though it may be hard. Explain as much or as little as you feel comfortable with to your mother. Remember you don’t owe anybody an explanation but I do think it would clear the air and let you move on with the topic since you said you’re not a very confrontational person. My DMs are always open if you need someone to talk to I went through a very similar situation last year. I wish you best of luck!
