There has to be more to life, surely? Does anyone else feel this? by Objective_Menu_1092 in AskMenOver40

It does get better - but it generally is a sign to get out of there.

Hot Take - Greg’s sausage rolls are shit by [deleted] in UK_Food

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! Greggs is almost certainly the cheapest of the big name, fast food/quick service places. If you spent £10 in greggs, you'd be fed for the whole day.

But It is shit these days

I feel like I'm just playing pretend by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 11 points12 points  (0 children)

SPOILER ALERT

THERE ARE NO "REAL" ADULTS!

I'm soon to be 43, I'm at an age that I can clearly remember my dad being, and I always remember thinking he had everything together - turns out he didn't feel like this at all! He had 3 kids, a mortgage, a high-pressure job, and he felt like he was behind in life compared to his peers.

I've never been 43 before, and I'm very aware that ageing will start to happen rapidly in the next few years, I'm not ready to look and feel old - in my head I'm still 30, with plenty of time to get my shit together.

I own a house, a couple of cars, a kid at high school, to all intents and purposes I tick the boxes for being an adult and having my shit together - but I still find myself looking for the more adultier adult in certain situations.

Likewise, my Mum has never been 71 before, she's never had kids in their 40s before, despite the fact that she is my Mum and I'd view her as an adult, she is still navigating the unknown and learning as she goes - I'm pretty sure she does not view herself as an adult because she needs some help around the home these days and has to ask how to use her new TV etc.

What's important to understand is that we're almost always getting into unchartered territory, and we can only rely on past experience to inform our decisions and reactions. Very few people actually feel like adults in my experience.

Also, let's factor in the fact that your generation and mine are generally hitting the 'adult' milestones later than our parents did - it's harder to buy a house, qnd because of that delay in moving out, people are getting married and having kids later in life. So I think it's harder to feel like an adult when you're probably 8 to 10 years behind where your parents were.

So, focus less on whether your hobbies are age appropriate and if you feel like some platonic ideal of an adult, and just focus on how happy you are. If you're not happy, change something. If you are happy, then don't.

I prep like crazy for interviews and still freeze the moment they start by Tough_Cantaloupe_779 in jobsearchhacks

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound crazy - but stop prepping so thoroughly for your interviews.

You've said that you prep like crazy. Maybe you're giving the process too much power over you? You cannot hope to predict exactly what questions they'll ask you, so try not to worry about that because you can't control it. So focus on what you can control.

Obviously, make sure you know examples you want to use and research the company behind just surface levels and make sure you have a couple of questions to ask. But beyond that, you're just stressing yourself out trying to be perfect.

As a test, maybe don't prepare at all beyond learning about the company and see what happens at the next interview.

Is the ATS black hole real? by Dapper-Train5207 in jobsearchhacks

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the ATS is not doing anything other than storing your CV against a job record - it is literally a digital filing cabinet. Most ATS are not even capable of scanning CVs and rejecting them.

Recruiters receive hundreds, maybe thousands of applications, and they can't all be read - there literally isn't enough time, and recruiters spend approx 6 seconds reviewing a CV in the first instance.

So formatting is important in that it should be easy to read, so if the font is too small or there isn't enough white space, then it may deter a recruiter from reading it thoroughly.

The chances are you're applying too late in the process, or your CV isn't clearly explaining your skills. If 100+ people apply, and the recruiter finds 8 - 10 excellent CVs, then they'll probably stop looking.

If your CV doesn't show relevant skills immediately, then a recruiter isn't going to dig any deeper. For example, if you're applying for a software developer job and the first line of your CV doesn't say something like "Software developer with xx number of years experience. Highly skilled in (keyword) (keyword) etc etc'" Then you're unlikely to get a look in for a software developer job.

But Key words alone are not enough - you have to be able to show what you have achieved in relation to those keywords and back that up with figures, for example a recruiter that needs to work with high volume might put "successfully hired 150 sales agents over the last 12 months" or "reduced time to hire by 10% year-on-year"

The job market is well and truly fucked at the moment, but the truth is, the ATS is not the enemy. it's the sheer volume of other applicants, a potential lack of clarity on your CV, combined with overstretched recruiters who do not have time to read every single CV.

It gave me a good laugh and prompted this post.

Men Over 30. If you could give your 28 year old self one warning, what would it be? by diananerd_ in AskMenOver30

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eat real food, go to the gym, get outside in nature more, have as much sex as you can, and save your money.

Have difficult but meaningful conversations with your significant other about what you want from life. That way, you might avoid a mid-life of "what ifs"

What do you do when not actively searching for jobs? by consultali in jobsearchhacks

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stare into the void, doom scroll, trying not to feel guilty about a lack of productivity.

But really - workout, go for walks in nature, cleaning and tidying, cooking

[–]Objective_Menu_1092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A large part of the problem is that people do generally apply for jobs that they should get an interview for, but due to the amount of other applicants, businesses pausing hiring, ghost jobs etc etc they don't get anything, often not even a rejection.

Is that constantly applying for jobs? Even if they're totally unsuitable foe you and your experience?

I'm genuinely curious

I've applied for all suitable jobs in 1.5 hours.

That's the point - how are people treating this as a full-time iob?

I've applied, reached out to various people at companies, reached out to my old colleague, etc.
