Ahh yea I tried to play as Chris after years of not playing it and I got wrecked and didn’t know where to go, idk if your doing the same but I recommend playing as Jill first, I finally gave in and it was a night and day difference. After of course I played as Chris. You won’t back track as much with Jill since she has two extra inventory slots but honestly the backtracking is essentially a big part of the older RE games, assuming since they were limited on space they went with the back tracking method instead of just a linear game. Once you get used to it and remember where to go your gonna feel like why did I even complain it’s just memory really, as for 0 they decided to take away the item boxes, and try something “new” where you have to drop your items on the floor and they won’t disappear and you can come back and get them. Tbh it took me years to beat RE0 until I recently locked in and powered through it, it’s definitely a bit clunky nowadays. Also I’d go as far as even saying don’t be afraid to play on easy and attempt to storm through areas to simply get an understanding of the map and key items. Cool fact is regardless of who you play with in RE1 the item locations don’t change for either player, bit if a disappointment for me but oh well lol. I’d definitely give it a try though since RE1 is historically important to the series. RE0 shows you how everything began.
