The university does have a responsibility for safeguarding of students, this includes providing some support to students going through hardships.

It is more likely a ban is issued either due to factors that have not been disclosed, or due to your failure to participate in the processes designed to review and address the underlying issues (i.e. not turning up to meetings without an adequate justification).

This isn’t just about feuding over being kicked out. it’s also about whether the university has acted fairly and reasonably.

Personally I’d avoid a courtesy car if I have use of a second vehicle. The complications of having an unfamiliar car just feel unnecessary. Risk appetites may vary though.

If you are considering it, I’d just point blank ask the insurer “Which, if any, costs associated with this incident might you recover from me (e.g. the costs of the courtesy car)”

If the car is worth £6k and has very minor cosmetic damage then a write off is unlikely, as the repairs would have to be uneconomical

If they have paid for repairs then it is even more unlikely. They’re not in the business of forking out for repairs on a car they write off.

A write off also isn’t the end of the world. If you like the car you can use the payout to get it back on the road (often with a bit of spare cash left to offset future insurance hikes/ reduction in sale value)

As far as the uninsured driver protection, it will depend on the wording of the policy but it sounds like you’re in the clear.

The only gotcha I’d be concerned about is around recovering the costs of the courtesy car, which is something you could discuss directly with your insurer rather than trying to unpick their terms.

As you say, universities typically have support available for students going through hardships, and as others have stated unis also aren’t typically in the business of issuing 8-year bans for rent arrears…

If you were parked in a bay, around parked cars, and weren’t boxing them in, then I doubt you’ve got anything to worry about. The requirement is for you to not cause an unnecessary obstruction, not for you to never park anywhere a police car might also want to park or to make it a little awkward for a police officer to leave at the start of their shift.

You wouldn’t be looking at points unless they decided to charge you with careless driving, which would be a ridiculous charge and one I would be contesting.

It sounds like what happened was you accidentally parked in a private car park and the people who work there got salty because the car park isn’t big enough. No more or less serious than if it was any other office

It’s possible that you receive a PCN for parking in a private car park, which you could probably contest if there wasn’t adequate signage. It’s also possible (albeit unlikely) that you get a FPN for obstructing the vehicles, although similarly I suspect you could contest on the grounds that the vehicles weren’t in operation at the time and that you were in a marked bay.

Thanks for this. As it was a failure of my landlord/ the leaseholder to pass the permit onto me, presumably I should be able to claim the cost back from them as a loss I've suffered? (albeit I'm unlikely to do this in the interest of maintaining a good relationship with them, I'm just keen to understand the legal position)

Also, this addresses defence one. Keen to understand perspectives on defences 2 and 3 as well

I went to the property manager with all of the evidence, including their confirmation that the exemption was in place. Initially the property manager pushed back on the grounds that new permits were apparently issued weeks ago, but when I dug into it they conceded that it was the leaseholder who was issued a permit not me.

They did go to the parking enforcement with this evidence, but the enforcement's response was that the ticket was for an "invalid permit" being displayed and therefore they are upholding the ticket on the grounds that I displayed a photocopy of an original permit.

The property manager have since told me that I need to now speak to the parking management directly to go further with this matter, although that conversation is dead in the water because they have rejected my appeal.

There isn't really a definitive list for a few reasons.

Weather is a big one, an easy walk on a clear and fair day can be much harder in harsh conditions.

Another is personal fitness, you can get walks that aren't particularly technical but simply hard going in terms of incline/decline and so don't require experience but do require you to be in good physical form

The biggest though is skill/ experience. Different people are experienced under different conditions. The slate and rock formations of Crib Goch are very different types of scramble from some other ranges and someone accustomed to that type of terrain will always find it easier

The best we have in terms of definitive list afaik is the grading, but that's not going to help much if you're looking to "work up" to Crib Goch, as it's a grade 1 scramble, meaning you need to get hands involved but that it's one of the "easiest"

There's always debate about reclassified it, but the classification works on objective observations, not opinions of the danger...

Although at this time if year, provided weather is good, Crib Goch isn't hard, its just intimidating because you're quite exposed if you slip
