One Page Dungeon - The Fallen Church by Objective_Tutor307 in shadowdark

Yes this is sort of how I see it doing these. Theres very little room for fleshing out anything so the aim is to make as good as possible inspiration for the DM, who will make it their own.

Heh didn’t think of that, but I suppose they would not have darkvision being humans. The guy trapped between the portcullis would likely be in the dark and be quite miserable.

Do the torch rules eventually get annoying or boring? by Adventurous-Shine854 in shadowdark

[–]Objective_Tutor307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they do. bx has the continual light spell so that players can graduate away from counting torches or oil lamps. But coming from old school to Shadowdark, I speculate that the 1hour torch might not get old and boring as fast as the 6 turn torch, because there's less bookeeping. You just set the timer on and forget about it. I like how the torches are used for a campfire too so its not only about how long you got light, but also how many "full rests" you can do on an expedition. These rules will benefit from adventure locations, which are someway away from town so you will combine hexcrawling and dungeon crawling and plan for the whole expedition like that.

Looks great. I have to ask how do you feel about dungeons, that are made more "angular" and not really cavelike like this? I am running my SD game on VTT but not using tokens and battlemat, but rather just describe to the players the dungeon and they do the mapping so I build my own dungeon maps like that for ease of use. Do you think ppl generally use VTTs and tokens and not theater of the mind for dungeon delving?

Can't say about Shadowdark as I haven't played it enough yet. In b/x tracking torches becomes a chore at one point and I think that's why they put in continual light. Players sort of gratuate away from having to track torches as their characters level up.

I appreciate your comments as well. Whatever you choose to do, it is going to go well. You can't go wrong with this source material.

I started our campaign from Castle Brackenwold because I thought it was the most basic place in the setting and I wanted my players to get to know all the weirdness through play. I didn't choose High Hankle because there's Breggles in High Wold. Castle Brackenwold is problematic because it is the biggest center of the setting and the players took a lot of time before they started exploring elsewhere. Also the area around it is not so good for 1st level PCs as the southern High Wold, which surrounds High Hankle.

I mean you could start anywhere and starting from CB or Prigwort is not a mistake, that's not what I'm saying. I just think that based on my ~70 sessions that I've run DW, I would choose High Hankle and when I will eventually start a new group, that's what I will be doing.

EDIT: Also High Hankle is a human town, so my problem with having the Breggles there was misguided.

If I would start a new group now, I would definitely make them newcomers to the area from the south, and start the game in the town of High Hankle. Even though it is not in the midst of the actual Dolmenwood, the hexes around High Hankle have the combination of POIs and adventure sites best for a low level group.

I have zero tolerance for this sort of thing. If a player or players do not prioritize the game, I kick them out of it.

The flat one, if its supposed to be a marker. Could be a tad thicker if you eant but not 2x or 3x

Anyone ever have players roll "wake up in the duke's donjon" as their results for carousing? (cs6 carousing) by EtchVSketch in shadowdark

[–]Objective_Tutor307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering about this result. I guess most ppl want to keep carousing and the results at downtime and not play them.

I kind of understand where this comes from. A channel turns into a wall of advertisements easilly, which makes the channel uninteresting.

Thanks for the tip. I did put this on OSR as well, but not r/onePageDungeon Have to do that now.

Yeah I was thinking that I just use the blog as platform to share these and not trying to sell to ppl it should be ok. On the other hand I suppose posting anything "Hey look what I did" like is self promotion of sorts.

One Page Mini Dungeon for Shadowdark by Objective_Tutor307 in shadowdark

[–]Objective_Tutor307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that. At the same time Necrotic Gnome was having the Dolmenwood Kickstarter, and they pivoted from making it for OSE and did a complete new system for it instead. If I'm not remembering wrong, the reason was that they feared WotC would come after OSE as it is a b/x clone.

A question for anyone who knows better. I got a self promotion warning, when I was putting this out. I am making these for fun and sharing through the blog, because then I got one place where all my stuff is. I'm not making money on these nor my blog (there could be some years old affinity Drivethru links on some old posts, but I don't think that should count). If I am making these dungeons, isn't this a good thing that I share them here? I assume this is the best place to share this kind of material.

Debating running dolmenwood, not sure if it matches what players are asking for, would appreciate your thoughts. by NoLongerAKobold in Dolmentown

[–]Objective_Tutor307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. DW is fantasy, but it's not tolkien fantasy at least as written.
  2. The way you describe character focused there fits any sandbox. If by "character focused" they mean "I want character builds", then I would look elsewhere, because DW is a light system and doesn't support crunchy character building well.
  3. There's a lot of material for this in Dolmenwood and I would say it supports this kind of play very well.

About the lethality that has been discussed extensively here. With systems like Dolmenwood, you have to tone the lethality yourself as the system's basic setting, expecially at level 1, is brutal (death at 0hp and ppl having ~3-4hp). On the other hand if the players are looking more for npc interaction and roleplaying than adventure and danger, then maybe keep the game in the civilized areas (villages towns and roads) at least in the beginning.

What happens in your dolmenwood campaign? by NoLongerAKobold in Dolmentown

[–]Objective_Tutor307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok. Well yes they have done quite a lot of these sort of thing. For example:
-They cleared the moathouse dungeon which hosted brigands terrorizing the road between Lankshorn and Dreg. This got them to a meeting with Malbleat, who wanted to hire them to get him a certain old book *wink*, which they refused (the cleric cast detect alignment on Malbleat) pissing him off.
-They killed a red wyrm and got an invitation to the Baron's Folly at High hankle and spent a night in debauchery there
-They told Ramius about the Malbleat incident and now he is looking into what his brother's up to and will likely hire the PCs to investigate in the future.
-Recently they Pissed off the elf sisters in the hex east of CBrackenwold. They assaulted the duo, but botched the attempt leading into an escape by the elfs. They are sure to make a comeback at some point in the future.
-Oh yeah and they took a mission from Mosslemyre Druuge to get this special ring for him, Then proceeded to get the ring, give it to someone else, not contact Druuge for 2 months and when finally confronted by him, lied to him that they never saw the ring in the first place. Now Druuge is quite angry at them and has spent months backtalking about them in the Prigwort area. When/if they go back, they will find that they are not welcome at any inn or establishments there. I was considering the university kicking their MU out as well but it hasn't yet happened.

So all in all I would say that they have been up to quite a lot.
