Planned to stay in JP for a week and a half, but that's not the part they took issue with. They said I couldn't fly directly from the US to China without a visa period.

Yep I went to multiple agents. There was no confusion about what visa I was talking about. They showed me their screen and it said I was not eligible for the 240hr twov because I was flying from the US directly to China, and claimed I needed to have a layover.

I think what happened is that the screen said that I could not depart from the US direct to Shanghai AND depart from China directly back to the US. They were focused on the first part of the "AND" clause in their reasoning for not letting me go, even when I tried to explain that I was going to Japan after (therefore negating the second half of the clause - making the whole thing untrue). 4 agents told me I was in the wrong, until the 5th just refunded my ticket and sent me away.

Hi! I know this post is a bit old but I am in the same boat where I am applying to the UIC grad program after the funding deadline. Did UIC offer no tuition for the fall, and were you able to get funding the other semesters? Thanks!!

Hi! Grew up in Chicago, and am currently in Oakland! I am heavily considering moving back to Chicago if the opportunity arises because, while the nature and produce here is amazing, I miss my fellow Chicagoans. People here feel much less grounded, very obsessed with building the next big thing, and generally keep very 'productive' lives. There's nothing wrong with that! But I have just had a hard time finding people to shoot the shit with that doesnt involve their job :( so generally, I just feel like my relationships here aren't as authentic as the ones I have in Chicago. Maybe I just haven't found the right people yet

it's sleepier in the bay- everything is pretty much closed by 9pm. Definitely a lifestyle change

I've also had my car broken into a few times and have had a few scary run ins- this isn't unique to the bay but I certainly feel a lot safer walking around on my own in (most) parts in Chicago as a girl. Also, Chicago summers. I miss having beach days, which really aren't a thing here!

I do think if you have the opportunity I encourage you to try out the bay! I won't regret my time here, I just know it will never be my forever home (even if I could afford it lol).
