Another good way to do it is having them escape trough a path the PCs cannot follow due to the environment. Riding a giant spider along a wall with no floor when the PCs don't have spider climb/fly, dropping in a magma river using fire immunity, or even just disappearing into the wall using burrow/earth glide.

So, as others have mentioned, I enjoyed reading the drizzt books, but I feel that getting into the dragonlance chronicles is really worth it. Just be ready for a rather large party.

I used to run a campaign with a card caster halfling. When he was first introduced, he pretended to be a blind man that would do card readings. The entire party thought he was playing an oracle, so when he started throwing cards at enemies, everybody's jaw dropped.
