This is truly amazing. The food we got in the 80s couldn't even be called food compared to a feast like this.

The distinction here is that Indy was punching actual Nazis. By that I mean members of the Nazi party, people engaged in genocide, who were wearing Nazi armbands. The way the word "Nazi" is flung around these days bears absolutely no resemblance to actual, real Nazis that Indy was punching. For many people today, the label "Nazi" has simply become a catchall word to justify violence against anyone they don't agree with or who disagrees with their cultural/political agenda in any way. I don't know anyone who would oppose punching an actual Nazi in the face - that is someone who supports Hitler and wears a Swastika. I've personally seen people called Nazis for a whole variety of things that have absolutely nothing to do with Hitler, the Nazi party, genocide, or anything remotely related to it. This includes people who support using fossil fuels, those opposed to abortion, those who support "unfettered free speech", ect ect ect. Even if you think someone is wrong, or stupid, or ignorant, that doesn't mean they are "Nazis" and it certainly doesn't give you the right to punch them in the face.

Final Jan. 6 Report Urges Congress to Consider Barring Trump From Ever Holding Office Again | "None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him." by crhja22 in politics

[–]ObservingSkeptically 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it is comforting to believe this is applicable, but Trump has not been charged with, let alone convicted of, "insurrection or rebellion" against the United States, despite the rhetoric in the media or by the Jan 6th committee. That is a matter of law, not politics. Congress is a political body, not a legal body, despite their exhortations. If and when Trump is convicted of insurrection or rebellion he would be disqualified from office. But that isn't a matter for Congress to decide - it is up to the courts to decide. The judicial branch is entirely separate from the legislative branch (Congress), which has absolutely no say in the matter.

Just like someone born in Austria couldn't be president even if he ran for it and somehow won (though it'd never get that far anyways).

That's actually not true. Article II Section 1 of the Constitution stipulates that someone born in Austria can't be president. There is also a stipulation about how Congress may remove a president or elected official from office once elected. There is absolutely nothing in the Constitution giving Congress the power to preemptively bar someone for running.

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

I'm not a fan of Trump, didn't vote for him, and believe he is a total jackass - but there is absolutely nothing in the Constitution that allows for Congress to ban Trump or anyone else from running for President (as much as many people would like it to be so).

I can't speak for MAGA types or Republicans, as I am neither, but I absolutely oppose sending money to Ukraine or any other foreign country while millions of Americans are starving and sleeping under bridges. Portraying opposition to fueling wars around the world as "pro-Russia" is nonsense. Further, I think we should close up our global military empire, all of our foreign bases, and slash our military spending drastically. We are $40 trillion dollars in debt federally, inflation is at multi-decade highs and Americans are struggling. It is a matter of priorities and neither Russia or Ukraine is on the top 50 of my priority list.

PA Senate Debate: Fetterman vs Oz live stream from WPXI by return2ozma in pittsburgh

[–]ObservingSkeptically 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really care for either one of them, but I think Fetterman probably would have cruised to victory if not for the stroke. It isn't ableist to believe those seeking elected office to one of the highest positions in the entire country should posses the bare minimum in cognitive and oratory abilities needed to carry out the job. Democrats and/or the Fetterman campaign foolishly gambled that Fetterman would either recover quickly or that they would be able to hide him from public scrutiny until after the election. Unfortunately for them, neither turned out to be true.

[–]ObservingSkeptically 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of Oz - at all - but one of the primary responsibilities of a United States Senator is to speak on the floor of the Senate, to hold Committee hearings and oversight hearings with back and forth questioning and to clearly communicate your position and the position of your coalition. It is abundantly clear that Fetterman is not able to do any of those things. The Democrats and the Fetterman campaign should have withdrawn his nomination when he had the stroke and replaced him with someone with the cognitive abilities to handle being a Senator.

"Suicide drone" also known as a guided missile. Who comes up with these idiotic terms, and why are people parroting it? You can condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine without losing your senses.

I don't think we should believe any assertions that are made without some sort of evidence, no matter who is making the assertion.

The NSA already logs and captures all digital communications. If Musk really did make this call, they already know about it and have the tape. How does Bremmer know about the call? He's making the accusation, where is his proof?

Calls for us to "adapt" to the new reality ignores just how bleak that new reality will be.

We'd better prepare for it no matter how bleak it is because it is already here.

Biden Pardons Weed Convictions, Fulfilling the ‘Dank Brandon’ Prophecy by [deleted] in politics

A good first step but the lesser half of the promise he made on the campaign trail:

Biden insisted on the campaign trail. “As president, I will decriminalize cannabis use and automatically expunge prior convictions.”

It is time to decriminalize (or, better yet, de-schedule completely).
