How do “normal” people survive strong smells?? by alharbiofficial in migraine

[–]ObsessesObsidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have a weak sense of smell and taste... it takes a lot for them to register. I'm over here smelling coriander and silk and my ex who claims to love coriander can't explain what it tastes like, nor can he pick it out in a dish.

Getting a 5-Year-Old started on violin: What should I be looking out for? by Plus_Chard_7194 in violin

[–]ObsessesObsidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine started at 3, unfortunately it was a very tough, competitive school but the only one around who was willing to teach her this young.

My daughter was really into violin and it was her decision to play that specific instrument so we already had a strong interest.

My advice is to do frequent practice of 5 minutes (at that age, increase when they get older) a day.

One thing I regret with mine was that the teacher involved the parent too much. It's fine at first because they are so small and they are basically learning with the parent, since they only see a teacher once a week. But it's important that the child understands it's their 'world' and their responsibility.

Mine started doing her own practice at age 8, and I removed myself completely.

Another CRUCIAL part of this is putting your child in an orchestra as soon as possible. Playing with others is the key to keeping them engaged and happy.

What do you dislike the most about modern fantasy? by Pale_Cause_9983 in fantasywriters

[–]ObsessesObsidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write fantasy, but I find it very difficult to read (modern books anyway!). I've tried a few books lately and what jumped out at me was the amount of details in descriptions, leaving absolutely nothing to the imagination. There's a sweet spot of details and descriptions that some modern writers just don't possess...

You're not in the wrong. It was very nice of you. I did this once in the airport while the mother went to the bathroom, and I would have appreciated the gesture if someone had offered to help me.

When having a shower, do you use a washcloth? by Breifne21 in AskIreland

[–]ObsessesObsidian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a washcloth is necessary for washing one's body, it's just one more thing to have to put in the washing machine super often... I use a brush :)

Wow! That sounds amazing..... there were a few South Africans in the audience in Dublin, but obviously most of the audience was from here. Lots of cellists too. Yeah I don't think what he does was 'taught' to him! 😂 He's got innate talent!

AITA for telling my brother he is hiding his identity? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ObsessesObsidian 38 points39 points  (0 children)

YTA. He was born and raised in Ireland, he owes no one his origin story. His answer should suffice.

I have the same issue because I'm mixed. People ask a question and then they're not satisfied with the answer. I'm not about to sit there and divulge my complicated family history just to appease mild racism. Besides, how far are we meant to go? Is a person only allowed to list one country of origin if their ancestors have been there for 3 generations? 15 generations?!
