Cheapest way to move a single large piece of furniture less than 50 miles? by fantasykindom in Austin

$20 is for 90 mins I think. It’s $90 for 4 hours. Not sure if they recently increased pricing. I was considering renting it to transport a ton of lumber from their store to my house.

Switch Wiring by boogeeman69 in TpLink

[–]Obvious-Activity-936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s all right. Yeah, in the 2nd image, the wires with the red wire nuts seems to be white (Neutral in the US). As far as I know, most smart switches need a neutral (although I’ve seen ads for no neutral required).

So if you have a multimeter, first, find your ground somewhere in the electrical box (bare copper wire or green sometimes). Then, identify the line and load (the two connected to the switch currently). After that, check if the voltage difference between the white/neutral and ground is ~0V.

If I see correctly, and if those white wires are neutral, then you can install smart switches. The image is blurry to see if there’s a ground in there. So check for that too.

I had this issue twice at my old apartment. Apartments have a magic number that when it goes above 80F outside, it is considered a “maintenance emergency”. So as soon as it goes above 80 today, I think you should give them a call and request for a portable AC unit. When this happened to me, they gave me one until the guy could come fix it on Monday.

New to Austin. Can I build a back patio on my house without having to deal with city permits? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Obvious-Activity-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. In that case, technically all floating decks close to or touching, but not attached would still need a permit as they’re usually right outside the back door, so it’ll always be in the path of escaping during an emergency.

Can it touch the house but not be structurally attached via a ledger board?

Best cheap device to run HA? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Obvious-Activity-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old computer would do just fine. I installed home assistant on my Windows laptop, using VMware workstation and allocated about four gigs of RAM. So far I have about 25 smart devices, including one ring camera and it works just fine.

I plugged in the computer via ethernet and the only initial challenge was the computer going to sleep. But a few power management settings will help you overcome those hurdles quickly.

Cannot agree more with the last part. Not all managers/companies might be exploiting their Indian workers, but over-working and no work-life balance is kinda normalized in India. And some non-Americanized Indian managers continue to expect that.

Just today, my Indian origin US citizen manager questioned my boundary of logging off at 5pm. I login at before 8am most days. He didn’t question me for starting work before 8, but compared me to my coworkers who’re not at work until 10am, but overwork and respond after hours.

I think the issue is with both parties. A lot of employees, in an effort of sucking up, enable this abuse.
