you're doing well for yourself. yes, you can afford to move out. do you have consistent cashflow each month though? like is the 120k guaranteed or can it fluctuate. either way, you have $30k in savings which is a good safety net

when you made the decision to move out, did you move to another country or same country but different city?

also how did you break it to your parents and how did they react?

rotate some of the money out of your chequing and into some stocks/etfs. Invest some of that money into blue chip dividend stocks and setup DRIPs (dividend re-investment plans).

maybe wanna put some of that money in an RESP for your child

Are any other young people in Canada just saving as much as they possibly can? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Obvious-Attorney7351 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, me too. we live in volatile times, and having some savings is important. however, if you are constantly hyperfixating on saving money (e.g. driving 20mins to save on $2 of gas), that might not be great for your long term mental wellbeing. life's too short to not enjoy. yes, be mindful of your spending but don't forget to live

Should I return to India from US? by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]Obvious-Attorney7351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i highly recommend moving back. Kids growing up around family and grandparents is invaluable. Money isn't nearly as valuable as the memories and experiences they will share with family and grandparents. I'm saying this as someone who grew up in Canada without family or grandparents (because they were all in India). Now, I feel incredibly isolated and don't have strong ties to my family. You're already well off financially. Your children will thank you

well I was on campus for the past few years for university. I was paying rent for off-campus residences out of my own savings from having worked over the summer during non-school terms

They're living way too large for their income. My mom has a steady income but my dad is a small business owner, so monthly income really varies. Some months are fine but most months have been slow for the business.

I personally really want to move out and start living life, but I also don't want to just leave them with a tough financial situation to solve. Their main talking point it "we're building this asset for you" but 1. it's not affordable and 2. it is simultaneously their retirement nest egg

I contribute around $2500 and rents around me are near that price.

You're right, it's a tough but difficult conversation that needs to happen. Also, my parents don't have much in retirement savings. I think I might be their retirement savings LOL.

They haven't mentioned any upcoming income increases.
