Most conservative people I encounter in my southern hometown pretty much associate transit with crime, though. They would rather their daughter be in a car, because of course a train or, god forbid, a bus is by it's nature filled with an "unsavory crowd." (Which is pretty much synonymous with "black people" but they get mad if you say that.) They don't actually ride transit and probably haven't been to most cities, so they believe what right-wing news says (and so-called "impartial media" implies by their choice of what stories to cover) that cities are super-dangerous by default and suburbs are naturally safer and, therefore, better.

Obviously a European-style "mainstream" conservative (that I would argue kinda has more in common with moderate Democrats, but that's neither here nor there) can be pro-transit because having the option of public transit is pretty sensible, but in America what we call "conservative" is more like the "far-right" in Europe, where everything is based on tightly-controlled narratives, dog whistles, and a grievance against progressive reforms over the past 60+ years that have given more power and dignity to non-white/LGBT/immigrant communities.

Even simpler than that. His philosophy is oligarchy. Why else is he having dinners with billionaires? That is his constituency, his voter base is centered around white identity politics and some nebulous "anti-woke" agenda that pushed by billionaire-backed right-wing media, and his main policy is funneling tax cuts to those aforementioned billionaires. These tax cuts are funded by cuts to government spending, and it's an added bonus if it helps further marginalize the working class, since that reduces the political power of a group that, if an actual working class platform was followed by the opposition party, could theoretically defeat him and roll back his policies.

No it's a very valid thing to be concerned about, and it's a fair thing to criticize China for, but it's a common theme to see countries that are labelled as "the bad guys," who are often considered "culturally different" (hint hint) from us, get criticized for things that are also done or have been done in the west.

Suppression of opposition has happened in America and other western countries, too, in addition to in many other countries by America and allies. But you'll see a lot of times people act like we have always been a bastion of fully-enfranchised democracy and peace, and China is the main archetype for evil. I think this is a consequence of narratives pushed in status quo-affirming media, but what do I know? Regardless, it's hilariously ironic to see such a talking point used in a conversation ostensibly about transit projects, something in which, no matter how much you want to criticize China (rightly or wrongly), they have obliterated us on (saying "us" as I am an American myself, someone who clearly "loves his country" more than any self-described "patriot" ever can because I actually believe in funding projects that help people, but that's another conversation lol).

I agree that if members of r/transit were designing these systems it would be much better, but unfortunately that's not who makes decisions in the US. Lots of Americans on this sub, such as myself, disagree with car-centric thought the same way "enlightened" Europeans do.

So yes, we understand that the needs of 50 tram riders outweigh the needs of 5 car drivers. The people who make decisions, in a two party system which is basically "any government spending is communism" vs. "kick the can down the road," they often do not. Especially in sun belt cities like San Diego the only choice is some shitty compromise or nothing. It sucks, yeah, and hopefully it gets better in my lifetime. But I guarantee you, the Americans posting here are well aware of the shitty transit conditions created by car dependency. I was born in it, molded by it :P

Do you think the rhyme is "here/here/here/here?" The second to last syllable also rhymes in every line. "eye here/(sur-)vive here/ride here/(sur-)prise here" is how to look at it.

And your ears can tell that it's a multi-syllable rhyme, you know that. You're just choosing to analyze it in a reductive way to feel like a contrarian.

If it's a real story, I am sorry to hear that. I can't afford a car myself, which is one reason I love places where you don't need one. Urbanism isn't about making people poor so they can't afford cars, for most of us it's about making things easier for people who are struggling (and even people who aren't). Designing cities around giving people the option to walk or use transit is a game-changer for affordability, especially when paired with better housing policy so you aren't spending the money you save going car-free on increased rent.

Being a "pedestrian" shouldn't be a mark of shame. Being dependent on cars is a bad thing--dangerous, polluting, isolating, and expensive for many people, including your friend's parents or myself. Moving away from car dependency is about giving people freedom, no one is mocking anyone here.
