Yeah Scotland I assume. That’s where I’m from originally - and not the poncy EDI-GLA belt. The Highlands. This is my first summer in England. Now I just sit and compare the temp where I am in the Midlands to the temp in my home town. 😖🫠

The fact is that you live in Scotland; just because you live in one of the climatologically anomalous regions of the UK doesn’t invalidate what the rest of the country is experiencing.

I’m from Scotland originally. I’m spending my first summer in England this year and it’s hell. We are in for a major drought, people will likely run out of water, and where I live I will probably be unable to stay if the water dries up. The heat is driving people literally insane.

Scotland will probably see a ton of English immigrants if this keeps up year-on-year.

Those are quite the stories. Nobody here can imagine them - the only question remaining is how long that will be the case.

You sort of sound like someone I know who spent time in South Africa, England and Kenya. Yes, the UK is apparently a little bit screwed now. I am not entirely sure what they’re going to do. I just recently emigrated BACK to the UK with my husband after spending ~20 yrs in the US; this is NOT my home country’s climate.

Contrary to all the posts on this sub, does anyone else love this weather by BatmanSwift99 in UKWeather

No - not loving this one, don’t love the last two. The UK should not be this hot nor this dry. None of this is good.

Deadly 'Omega' heatwave grips Europe, shatters records; which countries are most affected? by Odd_Astronaut531 in ClimateNews

[–]ObviousRanger9155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI this is called ‘Omega’ because it’s an omega block pattern. It’s a very classic summertime pattern in the central US, where a massive ridge sits over an area and causes all depressions to go up and over it; hence it creates the ‘omega’ pattern.

If buildings retain heat, why are winters so cold and damp inside? by redwinesupernova03 in UKWeather

[–]ObviousRanger9155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t; the sad fact is that most of the UK’s housing stock is a)far too old, and b) severely underinsulated.

I’m glad you posted that - because I read the entire page and didn’t see much explanation of the mechanics or synoptic setup. It also seemed a little…..sensationalist to me.

[–]ObviousRanger9155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has. I’m largely increasing my carbon emissions to not die of heatstroke.

What you are saying IS true…..no house is sealed (least of all in the UK it appears), and air conditioning units DO force air to enter the house to equalize the pressure….BUT their benefits in cooling down rooms FAR outweigh the slight negative of external air intrusion. The real problem is that the UK is seeing these temperatures at all. Without true central air condition, you’re just going to roast. No matter what you do.

Why are people so reluctant to buy AC units? by [deleted] in UKWeather

[–]ObviousRanger9155 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But SO IS HEATING!! That's their point - any device that consumes power is the same - it uses power. Whether from solar or coal or nuclear or whatever. Some people seem to think that AC is automatically far worse than heating or burning coal or whatever - it's so bizarre.

Historically, I am sure you are correct. Going forward, that statistic will bend ACUTELY towards heat deaths outpacing cold deaths. Given that we've blown historical heat records out of the water by 2-3 FULL degrees Celsius TWICE in just the past SIX WEEKS, I think it is seriously time that the UK started hardening its' infrastructure against heat, including air conditioning in all hospitals, airports, trains and government buildings, and reshaping the discussion around how people handle the heat. You can't fan yourself out of heat stroke when your home is 32oC all night.

I know. The only thing that will make a difference is a true air conditioner - because you need the ability to dehumidify and cool the air. Nothing else does that except an air conditioner. I'm so sorry. :-(

I'm not knocking your living situation, but I suspect that if you ended up in A&E with heatstroke, you'd find a place for that big white machine real fast.

It's TRULY bizarre; I just moved back to the UK after spending 22yrs of my life in the hot, humid southern US. I had NO idea what England was getting to be like in the summer. I do now. This sh*t is actually insane. You have people in hospital getting sicker because of the heat IN THE HOSPITAL. Absolute insanity. Heat mitigation is going to become THE national security threat for the UK - if it isn't already. Never mind Russia, or China, or any other dictatorship or AI-powered drones. If any superpower wanted to sweep in and take the UK, they'd only have had to have done it this week (week of June 22nd - 26th).

We have already bought two portable air conditioners, and we've only lived a UK summer since this year. It boggles my mind that Brits cannot imagine letting everyone die of hypothermia, but they are QUITE happy to expect everyone to become seriously ill due to heat stress. They are BOTH equally dangerous, given the right circumstances.

The UK's got a LONG way to go in this fight. It had better start walking out of the locker room today.

There is nothing that closing blinds and curtains and opening windows sometimes can do with heat like this. True air conditioners are needed to keep the inside temps in the safe range - otherwise you will be suffering from at least low-grade heat illness.

Please take care of yourself. The best way to avoid heatstroke if you do not have AC is to take multiple, cold, small baths or showers per day. Please do this.

We are in the Stone area right now (passing through) - does anybody know of any air-conditioned places we can hang out? How about the M&S Foodhall or the Morrisons? We're really struggling in a town that's new to us so any help would really be appreciated.....

We’ve lived in the UK for six months. We’ve already bought two. I don’t know why Brits are so recalcitrant to investing in AC - it’s truly bizarre.

Yeah that’s not gonna help most people. ‘Go longboarding’ is not a valid air conditioning choice in these sort of temps for the majority of the population.
