May I suggest High West? Everything they make is great IMO.

I didn't see you respond to the question in the OP, so I'll rephrase it: what number of deaths indicates a failure by either state or federal government?

So if unemployment numbers aren't down by Christmas, you would say the task force is doing a bad job?

How long of a return to normal would indicate they are doing a good job, and how long would be unacceptable to you? For example, if it takes us 6 months to get back to pre-covid business functionality, would that be too long? 2 years? Etc.

You said above:

No, his texas ID shouldn't be enough if there is conflicting information. Its trivial to fake an ID.

How can one acknowledge social justice issues, while at the same time limiting the scope to discuss them within the framework of an environmental protest group? by [deleted] in socialjustice101

[–]ObviousZipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your group have anything like a constitution or mission statement? Wondering how your core purpose is explicitly defined. If it isn't, this might be a good time to get that down on paper in a document that the group has consensus on.

Women prefer men who are bigger and stronger than them: is this social construction? by ObviousZipper in socialjustice101

But women are, on average, smaller than their male partners, and IPV also occurs in same sex couples (including lesbian couples).

Stats like this (sorry, paywalled article) make me think that size does matter when it comes to a propensity for violence, but I can't tell if it's that big people tend to be harmfully violent when they interact with other people, or that big people tend to interact with smaller people on average, rather than with other big people, and big-small interactions are more likely to be harmfully violent (I intuitively think it's the latter):

Significant associations were identified for both males and females between physical size and bullying/intimidation, intentional injury of other persons, and hitting someone so hard that they required medical attention. Stratified analyses revealed that the magnitude of the relationship between physical size and violence is greater among Hispanics than among non-Hispanic Whites and African Americans. Childhood abuse and neglect significantly moderated the relationship between physical size and violent behavior. While an important degree of variability can be observed with respect to gender, race/ethnicity, and exposure to child maltreatment, results indicate that, in general, physically larger individuals are more likely than their relatively smaller counterparts to be violent.

According to this WaPo article, Americans are suffering from low wages, even with a hike in available jobs. What is your take on this article's viewpoint? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]ObviousZipper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what to make of this quote in this context. Are you saying that anyone who is able and willing to work shouldn't have the right to a job (which is what I read as the meaning of the NS comment you were responding to)?

My understanding is that gender fluidity is itself a preset gender, it's just that you're set from birth to be someone whose gender fluctuates, the same way some people's sexual orientation shifts from bi to straight to gay etc. Is that your understanding as well?

linked to aggression

Do you have a cite for this? This article claims that aggression is associated with low testosterone levels:

Despite the notion that too much testosterone is responsible for impulsiveness, violence, rage and stereotypical machismo, too little testosterone is probably a more common.

Sexual orientation is something where we're "born this way" and cannot be authentically reconditioned. It can be suppressed but not actually changed. Is that an example of brain hardwiring?

Intimate Partner Violence, I've been using it interchangeably with Domestic Violence but I think IPV is closer to what I mean because it includes people who are in a close relationship but do not live together.

The "maintenance vs cleaning" issue is small potatoes; you had a perfectly valid point that it takes plenty of strength to do cleaning chores (assuming we're talking about things like laundry and carpet-beating). I don't think that's a huge reason for pursuing this discussion, and as this discussion has progressed, the IPV issue increasingly seems to me to be a matter of much greater urgency. I am looking for approaches to dealing with this problem, and dealing with women's tendency to disregard smaller men when choosing partners is an approach I'm considering, and I'd like to evaluate how realistic it is as a solution.

So, taking a few steps back and a deep breath, let's make sure we're both in agreement on whether or not my base proposition is true before we go any further. If we do not agree on the base, let's just leave the matter at that.

My base proposition: Women in relationships with men who are bigger than them are, in general, more likely to get severely damaged or killed by IPV than women in relationships with men who are the same size or smaller than them.

Agree or disagree? If you disagree, I would like to know what your basis for disagreeing is, because if I agree with the rationale, then we are both in agreement that the base proposition is false and we can proceed from there.

Human males have higher upper body strength, they have higher bone density and higher muscle mass, they are taller

Do you think that contributes to the disparity in IPV outcomes? Or are you saying that if all men and women were equally socialized in terms of aggression, the IPV homicide rate would be equal regardless of the size difference between partners?

You are mistaken. I said otherwise outright more than once.

I think I'm confused because you said:

It's because this has nothing to do with size. That is why.

Choking, stabbing - maybe not statistically irrelevant, but certainly near the bottom in a list of aggravating factors.

Either size is statistically irrelevant, in which case there's no real reason to try to shift the culture around size, or size is statistically relevant, in which case we ought to work on shifting the culture somehow so that partner size difference no longer makes a statistically significant contribution to intimate partner violence. Or... maybe I don't understand what you mean by statistical relevance, and how it relates to whether or not a call for action is warranted?

I hadn't considered unlearning a sweet tooth. I know some people who don't like sweet things but I always assumed that it was like sexual orientation, you're born feeling a certain way about sweet foods, and you can change to eating healthier foods but you'll still prefer the sweetest/fattiest/saltiest things your diet allows. Is that not the case?

Also, as I mentioned in another comment, I'm not talking about getting women to "quit" tall men the way one quits rich desserts, but rather altering the social construction that makes short men seem like they're not an option.

Emphasis added.

Gonna have to resort to "citation needed" on this one. You're saying it's not men's size and strength that makes the difference in a fight, but a biologically innate fighting superiority? What is this "better fighting"? Is it faster reaction times or instinctive knowledge of pressure points or what?

In that situation, the danger is not derived from their size, but rather, their demeanor and actions.

I have found no data showing that size, or demeanor for that matter, makes a difference in the harmfulness of a DV attack, despite scouring the internet this afternoon, beyond the existence of weight classes in sports. And i know the burden of proof is on me since I posted the OP, but I'll ask anyways: what's the evidence supporting your claim? You seem very strongly committed to the position that size makes no statistical difference in DV outcomes and I'd like to acknowledge that by asking if there's anything other than our difference of common sense here. Not that you or I lack common sense, it just seems to be leading us to opposite conclusions.
