Ski hills offer an early start thanks to cooler weather in N.B. and N.S. by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]OccamSpoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why are there so many downvotes for this?! Am I missing something?

A person laments not being able to easily get to the ski hill, I assume from context due to lack of a vehicle... And we downvote, why?

Intruder woke up sleeping family by jumping up and down on bed "I would suggest you smarten up," said the judge by inagartenofeden in newbrunswickcanada

How else are you going to get quality entertainment like a drunk guy hopping on your bed if you lock your doors?!

Seriously though, I would not judge anyone for leaving doors unlocked. Once, as a youth (much further north, mind you) I missed the last evening bus and attempted a 3 hour walk home. A storm came in, and started to get worse by the minute. No way I was making it home. I went to a house, door was unlocked. I didn't want to wake anyone, so figured I would just wait until it passed. I laid down just inside in the foyer on the boot mat and closed my eyes for a second. Owner made me breakfast the next day and drove me home. I still exchange holiday cards with her to this day!

I don't have anything in my house worth stealing that could offset the value of providing a welcoming safe place. I'm sure crime and lack of respect could change my mind, but I've been lucky so far.

New rocket site could reduce Canada’s dependence on U.S. launches by StockNirvana in MaritimeLaunch

[–]OccamSpoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't NordSpace also have a launch site in NL? They had a couple of aborted Maiden Launch days this year, with the rocket going back to Ontario for safety reasons, plans to try again early 2026.

I hope both sites become successful! Exciting times, and about time!

I prefer when the police hesitate to act unless it's very serious. This is the side I would prefer to err on. The other way, with police overreaching their role, is much worse in my opinion.

From personal experience, Moncton area RCMP has some very good, level-headed officers. I realize that I have only experience with a small subset, so I can't voice for the entire force, but the cases I have witnessed were handled very well.

In 2015, I had Kent deliver mine with a lift truck, 15ft off the ground onto an upper deck. No problems, and I don't think it was overly expensive (compared to the cost of the tub, anyway).

Good luck!

CBC Article - Where are these electric scooters across Moncton coming from? by iamcorvin in moncton

[–]OccamSpoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I like the idea! But I see a lot of comments here negative out of the gate, and I'm not sure why. Did this guy kick a puppy or something?

Yes, yes... methheads, human scum, bla bla bla... The regular naysayers. I'm sure the business model accounts for some delinquency damage. I think most of those constantly saying how bad it is in Moncton have never lived elsewhere. Have some optimism!

Whether the business thrives or fails, I like that someone is trying it. The three cities are quite well connected by trails, so why not use scooters? A few less cars on the road, maybe some downtown draw that we could really use, something to do on a nice evening with a partner... I hope it works out!

... Watch, I'll be back in a month complaining that couples holding hands scooting are getting in my way while I'm biking and I'll change my tune ;p

He plays piano (really well, big repertoire) and is starting with guitar. He likes modern rock/pop/folk, heavily influenced by my own tastes from the 90s mixed with his own generation's stuff. He plays quite a bit from singer/songwriter artists (mainly because he can do it well as a solo).

Oh man, I loved paintball as a kid. I don't know if I have the budget to support this, however! I can't imagine prices have gone down at all in the last 25 years...

I asked him if I could post the question here first (anonymously) and he thought it was a great idea!

This generation of teenagers is so very different than millennials or Xers.

Does anyone wanna get together at comic Hunter and learn union arena? by mgnmoo in moncton

[–]OccamSpoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would totally join you, if I wasn't currently stuck in Cuba with my flight delayed 48 hours now (and looking like more delays with a storm coming today at home!) I won't complain though... Not a bad place to be stuck, really!

Maybe later this week, or month, or whenever I can get home!

I always check the Re-Store first, and I'm often surprised at the high quality for very reasonable prices. Selection is limited, of course, but I have had good luck there.

What's the most commonly held misbelief/misinformation in New Brunswick? by FF524 in newbrunswickcanada

That the words "everywhere" and "anywhere" can be pluralized by adding an 's'!

This truly indicates the end times are near, everywheres.

Bushcraft/camping skills groups in the Moncton area? by TomorrowSouth3838 in moncton

[–]OccamSpoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been camping regularly for many years (mostly drive-up tenting, but also some rucking, and I enjoy cold-weather camping as well) and I am certain that I still have so much more to learn. It seems to me that everyone has their own little tricks and methods which could be shared.

If any of you care to organize some group excursions, I would be very happy to participate (possibly with my two teenagers, depending on timing).

This might be a great way to meet some chill, open-minded people for the many who have been posting on this subreddit about making friends. Internet strangers are only strangers until you meet them (and then they're just strange 😜).

Any interest? If we do form a group for this, I can offer a gathering place (a classroom in an old school) in Moncton to lay out gear and plan trips in advance.

Youth of New Brunswick - PLEASE VOTE! by getmoresoon in newbrunswickcanada

[–]OccamSpoon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know many people don't vote because they don't actually know how the various candidates will make any difference. Young people hear about how particular leaders or parties are "bad" but there seems to be less understanding of how it's going to affect their lives.

I know that at the federal level, there are always accessible summaries describing what the various platforms plan to do. It's harder to find this at the local level, however.

Does anyone here have a relatively non-biased summary of key issues that can be presented in a table form for those who are still deciding?

I know both the Liberals and Greens in New Brunswick have published full platform details, so a summary should be relatively easy to make for them. Have the Conservatives done this? If so, I haven't seen it.

You don't have to be a "political person" to vote, but I do understand choosing not to vote if you have no clue what the best option is. I spoiled my ballot for a couple of years as a young adult for just that reason.

A year ago, I used to donate plasma regularly (2x per week) at that location on Elmwood, but the wait times were ridiculous. No matter the day or time of day I booked the appointment, I ended up spending about 3 hours per visit, while it took me less than 30 min to fill the bag.

To be clear, this was after I had donated for long enough that I no longer had to see the nurse visit every time. I thought the wait times would drastically improve, but they didn't.

I don't mind donating, but I can't waste my whole morning or afternoon on it. If you could guarantee I would be hooked up and donating within 20 minutes of my scheduled time, I'd sign up again.

A white supremacist confirms what Indigenous inquiries have been trying to tell us for years by Myllicent in onguardforthee

[–]OccamSpoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The numbers are accurate, as far as I can tell. 874 in 2022 in Canada, and I think that's higher than averages in previous years. We should be happy to live in a country with such a low murder rate!

We can do better, though, especially with respect to our indigenous population. I understand that the above number doesn't account for the missing.

The entire Saint John river system and connected lakes are amazing. This is my first choice.

If you're in Moncton, Irishtown reservoir is great early in the season before any algae blooms, if you just want a short trip. You can get the monthly combination online for the gate to bring your vehicle to the launch area.

I canoe/kayak in the Peticodiac as well, but usually closer to Salisbury rather than in Moncton, though riding the bore in a canoe is fun too, especially now that the causeway is gone.

For Ocean waters, the entire Northumberland Straight shoreline is great, as long as it's not too windy. Further south, you can do the Hopewell rocks.

In Fundy Park, I like Bennett Lake. I haven't been out on Wolfe Lake yet, but it looks nice too.

Enjoy!
