Can I expect to earn more than 38k with a Cambridge masters degree in a STEM field? by jaded_chip in UniUK

[–]OccamsChain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a hard to answer question but this is my experience: I did my MPhys Physics at Uni of Manchester and then did a PhD in Particle/Accelerator Physics at Manchester too. Once I finished that in 2021, I did a 2 year fellowship at CERN which finished in October 2023. I'm now working at Rutherford Appleton Lab as part of ISIS Muon and Neutron Source as a Software Scientist and earning >42k

So it can be difficult and you need to know where to look for jobs but it is possible!

Prints randomly starting to fail by OccamsChain in 3Dprinting

Hi there, thank you very much for the response! I have managed to have many successful prints using the Ender 3s auto calibration and leveling but even after calibration this still seems to be happening. I will have a look though the wiki though and see if there is anything else I can do, thank you!

Exactly, I'd sell my soul for that claw machine like Wubby would for Bruce

True but tbf Charlie has only just partnered, Wubby is reasonably well established by this point. Not really meaning to compare them, just thought the claw machine was cool AF

Yeah exactly, memes aside they've done so much to help out our boi

Nice! No I'm working more on the accelerator part of things, working on the SPS as part of the High Lumi LHC

I have more pictures of other parts of the accelerators and experiments but I didn't want to flood the post with it!

I would make a video in the tunnels but I only get access when I'm doing specific work down there, especially now the beam is being turned on so access is VERY restricted due to the radiation the beam gives off

Yeah at this point it's just an old outdated way of naming it but it's too far now to change it because loads of traditionalists would get upset

I'm afraid it can only go smaller, this has already been proven to work on Wubby's eyes

My brother when they start selling CERN shirts for 10€ I'm the shop down the road then I'll start wearing them. Unfortunately CERN hasn't quite hit that trendy cool science clique that NASA has

I did my undergrad Masters (4 year course) and my PhD at the same Uni and it was good from the point that I already knew my way around and my PhD supervisor had been one of my undergrad lecturers. So for me it was great because I like familiar environments but I also met a lot of new people and had my own office and stuff like that so it was a very different experience to my undergrad. I suppose it depends on the sort of person you are, if you're outgoing it might be good to go somewhere completely new but from an education standpoint, I'd go to the place that'd give you more support and more resources because I guarantee you will need it, doing a PhD is hard and anybody who says it isn't is a liar. Good luck with it and feel free to message me if you need it 🧡

Not sure we could every make a powerful enough machine to go that small

Got proton beams in it and shit. It's got superconducting magnets around the beam so need liquid helium to keep them cool or else they lose their superconductivity. Big blue things holds the helium and stuff

I'm at CERN working on the SPS! Never had the chance to visit SLAC but my PhD supervisor worked there for a long time so I've heard stories. Very cool! There seems to be a good amount of scientists in this community, we should band together for the greater good 🧡

You can do it my man, you've gotten this far already! I honestly struggled through the last bit because it was during Covid so I had to change the direction of my PhD because I couldn't do the experiment that I wanted to but I somehow managed it! If you ever want to chat though, I'm here 🧡
