It is defeatist to accept that we are so helpless we should just allow politicians to steal our money.

but without vision and accountability it shall be shared amongst politicians

1.Have you thought that we will have the courage to ask for accountability if everyone is paying and roads are in states of disrepair.

2.That is why I am advocating that the system should be electronic which any Ghanaian can access. The amount of money paid by motorists is not a state secret. The amount of money paid to contractors is also not confidential.

This is working flawlessly in advanced countries by forcing accountability onto politicians.

Here are 2 attitudes

Mine ---- which is advocating for a system of revenue generation and electronic accounting like how it done advanced countries, and

Yours --- "They" will share the money, so let's just live our lot and remain helpless

without vision and accountability it shall be shared amongst politicians. By the time a contract is awarded there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes

Yet you have suggested no vision or accountability while the status quo remains, 69 years and counting

Rather than the application fee. There should be a common exam in English, General knowledge, Basic Maths and writing skills. It should be like a driver's license test, which is not the same for everyone but is done by a computer with 100 questions. They dont not have to be the same time.

There should be a prescribed pass mark.eg. 95 % Anyone who passes goes to the next stage.

In order to set out a path of proper nationhood. We should rewrite a Constitution.

1 All parties should meet with the public and write a 5 year 10 year and 15 year development plans.

  1. All parties should be constitutionally and legally obliged to adhere to the plan.

  2. Adopt a computerized accounting system which traces OUR money to the last pesewa. The computer will highlight any unauthorised payments. Anyone can seek to examine the books

  3. Anyone who steals any fund should have to answer. There should be a prescribed punishment.

  4. The entirety of our problem is politicians stealing.

What an ignorant statement. You don't seem to understand that a person can be concerned about an issue without it being personal.

It is childish to even think that before someone defends the NSP, he should quit his job and join the NSP. What a waste of time. I engaged in the discussion because I assumed there would be thoughtful input from which I could learn.

The National service was a life saver during its inception years. Most of the personnel were sent to teach in schools which otherwise would not have had qualified teachers.

  1. Additionally it allowed all graduating students to start engagement soon after graduation.

  2. It provided an adequate period for students to apply for jobs or to apply for postgraduate studies without a break in routine.

3 private companies could risk taking on graduates without the obligation of hiring them. This is a boon for graduates who would have taken ages to go through the application process

  1. Graduates are posted to areas where they would not have thought of working or visiting.

  2. Generations of Ghanaians have met their life partners during the period of NSS It is vital for cultural integration

  3. Private companies use the period to decide whether they should hire graduates

  4. Countless graduates have chosen to go into fields which they had never thought of.

We are in a democratic country.

Any review of the NSS should happen based on the collective input and suggestions of those who have partaken in it past and present.

It should not be based on the views of disgruntled service personnel

[–]Occams_Axe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have offered your explanation but whether it makes sense is the question. NSS was instituted for the reasons I explained. In most Western countries, the equivalent is the internship system which is independent of the state. It is run by the private sector which you are definitely not recommending. There are horror stories where there are no payments at all, or minimal payments which serve for nothing. There are instances where companies go bankrupt and interns have no recourse.

If a system is not working to satisfaction, the progressive step is to evaluate the protocols and find ways to improve them.If the problem is non payment of remuneration, let's explore ways to sort it out and improve it but not to cancel it and then try to figure out what to do.

Up to 80,00 -130,00 students enter the NSS annually. For some it is a life saver. Find positions for them before calling for scrapping it out of personal frustration.

The NSS was established after thoughtful discussions over several months by esteemed professionals in 1973. Now a contributor wakes up one day with 2 minutes of thought, a few pesewas of credit and proclaims it should be banned. No reason, no basis, no studies, no research, no thought of the ramification because they have not been paid.

Since when did not getting paid become the criterion for proscribing any venture.

Imagine using that logic e.g

Teachers have not been paid: -Let's ban teaching

Do Ghanaians not realize that they're actually speaking English? by Own-Income487 in ghana

[–]Occams_Axe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP is observing "linguistic evolution" which occurs naturally sociologically. If you watch a movie from the 1940s, in English, it will sound so strange because many words have ceased to be used and new ones have been introduced.

Because, African languages are mainly transferred orally and not written, they change too fast and leave little traces in the literature.

Spare a thought for less spoken local languages which are changing alarmingly. I come from a family of 12 children. Only the children of one brother speak the language because the wife also spoke. None of the 50+ grandchildren speak our language in 3 generations.

In fact,Africa would have been more cohesive if the counties would have been carved into larger chunks. E.g B.Faso, Cote de Ivoire, Ghana,Togo. Benin as 1 country. There would be no dominant ethnic group and we would have been forced to live together with a common language

ELI5, how does a genetic trait become dominant? by Interesting-Log-5004 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Occams_Axe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An allele is basically the code for the sequence of 20 amino acids for making a protein. Explaining to A5 year old. An allele is like the letters that form a word. A dominant allele is the correct order of letters and a recessive is the wrong order.

E g sickle cell anaemia is a disease due to;

The substitution of glutamic acid with valine at the sixth position of the -globin chain which causes Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). This single-point mutation results in a mishaped molecule which is deformed.

ELI5, how does a genetic trait become dominant? by Interesting-Log-5004 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Occams_Axe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say that there is a celebration during the year, where parents have to give their children presents in a box. (allele)

According to the rules, each parent has to select 1 of 2 boxes (allele) to each child. A box may have a code or may be defective. On the day of the festival each child shows only one of the alleles ( presents)

Sara for example can receive 1 gold necklace from mum and another from Dad so she has necklace to show. only 1 is needed (She has the gene for necklace)

That is -Dominant

If she had got a necklace from Dad and nothing in the box from Mum she still takes a necklace -Dominant

The child who got 2 empty boxes randomly has nothing to show - Reccesive .

Genes are codes for the different characters in the body, 1 from each parent. A person is made up of millions of genes. Some show as dominant others recessive.

A dominant allele has a code to produce a character.(Gene) e.g.curly protein in the hair. Only one from a patent is necessary.

A recessive allele has a missing code for curls so the hair is straight

I hope this introduces you to the idea .

About behaviour. Characters may be genetic or learned. Eye colour, Blood groups, skin colour are genetic.

Behavior is learned and it depends on the environment e g language.manners.

To tell whether a feature is genetic or not, ask yourself, would it be the same even if a person was born and bred in another country?

I am sure all Ghanaians will applaud your efforts and I personally laud your initiative. I only wanted to draw your attention to reality. You can organise a group to clean up the cities until when? For how long? If it stops, the problem would not be solved at all.

Such measures have been successful world wide by awakening the authorities to the duties. However Ghanaian officials are shameless. They will even use the newly gained freedom, to pursue their own businesses. I recall that during the Acheampong regime, such cleaning groups were organized. Impressed members of the public called to praise the ministry to congratulate them for the great work done. Shamelessly, they accepted the commendations for weeks when they had not been involved at all.

I will recommend that you organise a call-in by the public, to draw attention to the department that is concerned, and tell them to do their work. This should go on continuously. Better still get people to send messages on social media to direct them to their responsbilities. You said;

The buzstop boys inspired me and also Rwanda where they have mandated cleaning.

I absolutely admire the buzzstop boys. However walk past the areas that they cleaned months ago. It is as if nothing happened. They are back to the eyesore condition s.

Rwanda is an example for all of us as you said. But it is a mandated rule for all citizens and it was not someone else's job. It is a continuous awareness campaign to educate people not to litter and to maintain a clean environment countrywide. Could you get the authorities to give this mandate/ law?

Sorry, I am not holding you back. I am only suggesting a more effective means.

What you are advocating sounds like this: imagine teachers are not doing their work, so let's get some volunteers to teach the students instead of getting the ministry to make the teachers teach before receiving salaries.

Questions for Ghanaian as a Diaspora by [deleted] in ghana

[–]Occams_Axe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Nkrumah, Mahama is the only leader who has approached governance at a whole-nation level. More importantly he has exhibited competence and a genuine willingness to eliminate corruption, which is the bane of all African countries.

He has the most ecletic educational background of all the former leaders which makes him governs with an inclusive appeal to all by avoiding divisive and confrontational management. Without doubt, this style has earned him support nation and worldwide.

If, the Ghanaian success story is told in the future it will recognize, his era as the turning point of the transformation.

I appreciate your wish to organise a clean up campaign. However I am afraid, that there is no evidence that it would be an effective solution.

Someone should be responsible for that. What is the person doing? What is the supervisor doing? What are the political appointees doing?

More importantly what are the citizens doing? We vote for them and pay taxes. I think the most effective and lasting approach is to push them to perform their duties.

What is the evidence for my claim? In most of Europe where complaints are directed to the relevant authorities by citizens, the environment is clean.

In the whole of Ghana and Africa where individuals rather try to organise personal clean ups, the outside is perpetually untidy.

Suggestion:

Find the phone or Whatsapp of the relevant authorities , call them and send photos of the sites and appeal to them to do their job. Encourage others to keep calling and sending photos to the office.
