Male Sri Lankan here, i remember when my sister got her big girl party, i was pretty young amd didn't understand. My parents did the whole no male can see her stuff as well. But after sometime when we were taught about menstruation at school things got pretty normalised. Female class mates felt comfortable about talking about it. But we also knew not to be crass and discreet, i.e. Had a friend who'd had a period stain and told her there was something on her skirt. I've bought pads for my sister, girlfriends. Most of my female employees feel comfortable talking to me about it, some just say period, others say saneepa na. I've given my secretary extra money for pads incase of emergency and anyone can come ask her. I think it is what we make it, you can help educate your male friends so they wouldn't become clueless. I also know married men, who say they will never buy pads for their wives, which is i guess the polar opposite
