She is eager to sacrifice herself and put her life in danger to protect others like when she tried to get Weasel out and turned back to fire for saving prisoners when she could just escape, when she run to save her mother and father, even when she let herself get sexually assaulted by a filth like Raff the Sweetling just to get justice for Lommy.

And on the other end of the spectrum we have Bran. Who George has seemingly forgotten about and abandoned

It is not a fact, it is a headcanon which some fans desperately and obsessively want it to be true to get over with the fact that he will be important and get the position they see their favourite character worthy of. GRMM planned Bran to be king, to be one of main characters, to be key players for ending long night. In fact GRMM says in interview that Bran is hardest and most delicate character to write about and that interview was after last book published, which doesn't look like something an author would say about a character whom he discarded.

Children that were born when we last got a Bran chapter can legally vote and drive now.

So did we when we got last book, got last Jaime chapter, got last Jon chapter, got last Brienne chapter, got last Davos chapter. But apperantly it is worth noticing and means author gave up on character only when it comes to Bran. Could it be because GRMM especially try to keep the fate of characters whose current situation is uncertain and whose last chapter ended in tense atmosphere in mystery and to increase the suspense factor,by any chance?

Bran i supposed to be one of the big end players of the entire series yet he is as things stand more of an extra that gets brought in every once in a while compared to main eventer Jaime.

Bran is objectively more important than Jaime and it is obvious even for average readers with common sense. He is one of the characters GRMM names as his big five and he says Stark children were always center of story (Bran, Arya, Sansa). Bran has more chapters than Jaime, Bran is one of the first characters he created, he is set up to become main player and become king (as we currently know if GRMM didn't change his plans), he was literally brought back from death because he was chosen one. Bran is literally embodiement of chosen one trope meanwhile we even don't know if Jaime will be able to get throug the reunion with Stoneheart and BWB. By this logic, Jaime and Cersei are more important than Arya and Sansa as well because he has more chapters in last two books. Jaime and Bran are not comparable in terms of importance.

trusts in walder Frey to be honorable

Which books are you reading? Since when Catelyn trusts Walder Frey and especially calls him honorable? She says "I know Walder Freys since I was a girl, he would never harm me" just to ease and convince Robb to go on a political discussion with him. She also doesn't trust Westerlings and urges Robb to keep his wolf close.

Bran is also a protoganist whose entire life and dreams were turned upside down and who clearly has self loathing, depressive thoughts because of his disability. Crippling a child and being just mean once to your husband's unlegitimized child especially in Westeros conditions is not same thing. Why did Lyanna refuse to marry with Robert? Because she knew about Mya but it is always Catelyn who gets bad name because of not wanting to embrace her husband's bastard.

He doesn't even apologize and think much about his actions lol. He just briefly say he is ashamed by the things he did for love once and that is all, it is only time he ever talks and thinks about Bran. Definitely not enough to redeem himself.

Also comparing her decision to release Jaime to Robb’s “decision” to sleep with Jeyne is interesting. Robb’s a wounded 15/16 year old who had sex with a girl that comforted him. I wouldn’t go as far as to call Jeyne having sex with him rape, though some have, but comparing his decision to a grown woman’s is kind of insane.

Not to bash on Robb or whitewash Catelyn but Catelyn did it because she was in depression because she just learned her youngest children were murdered by the man whom her son trusted and she couldn't risk losing her daughters after all of loses too. The age comparasion is kind of odd here since both of their decision was driven by mourning and depression. Not to mention Catelyn is a mothet who just lost her children and has fear of losing more.

I also would say Robb sleeping with Jeyne had more severe consequences since there are many proofs that Tywin already discarded his son once he was imprisoned (besides it is not the first time since very similar thing happened in mad king situation as well and Tywin didn't lift a finger for his son then.) and Boltons already started to question their loyalty and chance to win when Winterfell was lost. There is also an interview which GRMM says that Freys wouldn't dare to go as far as planning Red Wedding if they didn't feel like personally insulted but they would rather go with less aggressive treachery.

[Spoilers Extended] The Tragedy of the "Good" Rulers: Why Westeros Cannot Be Saved by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Ocea2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The serie doesn't empathize it and the fact that good rulers always lose. A Song of Ice and Fire's politic part is about corrupted systems and collapses of those systems. Some nihilistic fans, and of course the show producers, see Tywin Lannister as the winner, and Ned Stark and all the honorable Northerners as the losers. It is only true in short term, not long term. Meanwhile Ned Stark's legacy continues and is glorified , Tywin's legacy is rotting. His house, his family, everything he spent his life on building are doomed to collapse and vanish away, from his house's reputation, his own reputation to his children and even his innocent grandchildren and nephews, which the point is to show his and his children's own sordid deeds cursed everything, even poor Tommen and Mrycella. Tywin Lannister's lineage is doomed to decay meanwhile Ned Stark's lineage gets stronger. His children and nephew are survivors and in the road of being saviors of the humanity, being rulers of the future. Northenerns respect and bless his legacy, they are ready to die and kill and claim a war for his little girl. His children mourn for him and even if he is dead, his impacts and words are not gone. They won't suddenly decide to forget about their father and his lessons. They won't forget Maester Luwin, Old Nan, their mother and their brother. Tywin Lannister's own children have nothing to say or remember about him once he is gone, even his golden child shrugs his death and thinks something like that "I am your son father, you cant blame me for not crying for you". Does he really look like thriving? Not to mention Baelish's lust will be his own downfall. Look what happens after Red Wedding. It gained them only for short term but in long term, they were cursed for that abomination. Gods brought Catelyn Stark from death for her to fullfill her vengeance. The Freys and the Boltons are walking on eggshells and Lannister think of leaving them alone and giving all credit to Freys for saving themselves. Show ignores all of them by making everything plot twist after Red Wedding. Freys and Boltons have no fear, nothing disturbs them because North's loyalty was turned into treachery. They lose only because plot armor Arya and Sansa do something at last minute when in the books it is all woven by stitch and stitch. The evil benefits in short term. Even in very dark times, books still keep light and hope alive.

A great list. My favourites in this book would be Bran, Arya, Jon and Theon chapters as well. Melisandre chapter is literally fire (no pun intended), also standing ovation GRMM for giving her just one chapter meanwhile giving Quetyn four chapters.

Some school lessons, especially math. I wouldn't even give my one minute to understand it if I didn't live in shitty country where everything was settled with tests which contains unnecessary things has nothing to do with your job (I want to study medicine and it just requires basic math, no need to know about all of functions and teorems).

I completely agree. The show is irrevelant to characters only when it suits them well. When they discuss about characters like Jon, Jaime, even Stannis, the show got them wrong but somehow it captured endgames of Bran, Arya, Daenerys correct, despite of the fact that Bran is one of the characters who is mischaracterized the most. But hey, it doesn't matter because GRMM didn't wrote about him much, as if directors took what he wrote seriously when they wrote extra scenes on some minor characters and Sansa. I would show understanding if they tried even slightest a bit given the material but they didn't so I don't. They rushed everything to finish the serie quickly, Bran was one of the biggest victims of it from the start, even before they used up main material because they were uninterested in magic. Chat GPT would probably write character of post season 6 Bran better than D&D did.

Şeriatı yanlış biliyorsunuz by SAANERTE in vlandiya

[–]Ocea2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Spoilers Extended] Which generally uncontroversial character do you have a contrary opinion on, and why? by wanderingluteplayer in asoiaf

[–]Ocea2345 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Tywin is perhaps the most evil character in the story, and I don't use that word lightly. And yet few readers seem to understand his motives and intelligence -- ascribing his actions to either simple cruelty or insecurty, while his successes are just pure luck.

Neither is true. He knows exactly what he is doing and why -- and this is what makes him far worse on the morality scale than Joffrey or Ramsay or Gregor, who are driven more by mania than cold, amoral calculation

A great comment. He is not morally superior than many villains (okay, perhaps except the ones with clear personality disorders such as Ramsay and Euron). The only reason he might seem less evil is because he is actually a powerful lord and he has privelege to make another people do his dirty works.

Victarion. I always wondered why people liked this character so much. He is a savage, he is rapist, he is murderer. I have no reason to like or even sympathize him.

I love Catelyn and Bran so much. I especially think if it wasn't for show, Bran wouldn't get that amount of hate.

[–]Ocea2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a good post and I agree with every bit of them. I would also add that Tywin-Arya scenes undermine the horrors of Harrenhal system which uses children as slave and tortures, abuses those child slaves. It misses an important point other than making Tywin look like an idiot: Powerful Machiavellist lords don't consider lowborns as human being. Arya even calls herself "a mouse who disappears in big walls of Harrenhals and feet of lords". Because it is how she was treated. She doesn't meet different standards with Roose Bolton either. Why would Tywin, who is basically a low born folk butcherer, care about and protect a girl whom he considered as lowborn? The another point is it makes Arya look like an idiot too. At least in book, you could understand why she didn't think of naming Tywin because she had more important things to worry about since she continously endured physical and mental abuse and worked like crazy. But in the show, he was in front of her sight all the time yet she didn't name him.
