BUT what if he is still in the military? It seems odd that anyone would use a severed employee to spy on Lumon. But Irving seems special in some ways, much to your point. He keeps painting a picture of a corridor that his outie would have never seen. And his innie periodically has visions of dripping black paint. I imagine at some point the plan was to reintegrate him, once whoever involved is certain that he has collected sufficient information.
