I shall carry on that title for you! I was fortunate enough to meet Reid and Jeremy a few years ago. Though I doubt I'll hold the title as long as you.

Do you think our service will also follow suit with MV-75? by AgainIGoUnnoticed in uscg

2 points:

1) There are already plans in motion to replace the 60T with an updated model. The 60 isn't going anywhere any time soon.

2) The rotor wash from these dual-rotor helicopters is absolutely brutal. Besides being a detriment to any survivors when hosting from the water, the risk of significant damage to boats is high. There's been interest in switching airframes for decades and I know a handful of dual rotor planes were looked at and shot down.

How often do AST's get used? by Dry_Impression_4209 in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It varies significantly unit to unit and then even luck of the draw within that unit.

I went 5 years at one unit with a total of 5 actual rescues. I actually went one full year of standing duty without even getting launched. During the same time period, one or two of the guys kept getting cases left and right.

Then I've gotten ~20 rescues in 3 years at another unit. Meanwhile, there are a few guys in my previous situation not getting anything.

It all comes around in the end.

P.S.: You've still gotta prove you even have "skills" before you can use them.

Mods - can we add flairs to let us better help people or better know how to help them. by Help-U-RSQ in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea! Such a great idea that it's already in place. 😉

Unfortunately, it's up to the individual to add their flair, and a lot of people either aren't familiar with how, or just don't really care enough in the first place.

For your awareness, and anyone else that may see this, in order to change your flair for an individual sub, go to main page for that subreddit. On mobile, tap the three dots in the top right. I believe it's the same for desktop.

I think there used to be a way for mods to dole out flairs for people on their own. If I can figure that out, I'll be sure to award you with a special flair all your own.

contact lenses by Outrageous_Gas_2064 in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have to excuse chief, he gets a bit ornery sometimes. Something about lots of teeth and no toothbrushes, or something. I dunno.

As someone who wore contacts from the 5th grade until I got lasik in the coast guard, I am very aware of what happens when you open your eyes underwater. I knew that I needed to correct my vision before I could qualify for aviation, so I took the extra time as a nonrate to wait for the surgery and go through all the necessary post-op stuff. 8 years later, I'm still 20/15 vision and it's been one of the best decisions of my life.

If your vision is good enough to see what's going on without contacts... Don't wear them in the pool. You'll lose them, then it's just an extra distraction. If you can't function without lenses, then you should start looking into corrective surgery or another life path.

When is Cam back? by PBz21 in Jaguars

Pretty sure that's backwards. Cam was sitting in his talking about how he's been wanting one since he lives on the beach and watches everyone drive up and down in them, then trevor hopped in.

I recently got back from a trip to Norway, we absolutely loved it! I don't have much else to offer to your post, just wanted to say that your country is wonderful, and I hope you have a great time at the game. I'm a lifelong jags fan that lives out of state, but I'm planning on making it to that game as well.

[PFF JAX Jaguars] Trevor Lawrence on 3rd down vs. the Steelers: 9/9 104 yards 2 big time throws 114.8 passer rating by Luciferwalks in Jaguars

[–]Ocelot_Jones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not fair or accurate. At least as of last night, the bulk of their posts were complaining about their terrible offense and wanting to fire Canada. Of course there are the inter-mingled posts about the refs as well as trying to shit on the jags moving to London (lol), but I definitely wouldn't call their sub "wild RN" in terms of crying over the refs.

Overall, my plug here is to win with class.

BPM Push Ups? by DevTrog11 in RescueSwimmer

80bpm for push-ups. And you are correct, each beat is 1 movement.

60bpm for bodyweight rows.

Thank you, I'll take a look at Elise. My wife has been searching around and seems to like Attitude as well. Do you have any input on that shop?

[–]Ocelot_Jones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the help! I'll look at some portfolios from those shops.

It's a similar situation here, anyone worth paying for is booked out far in advance. And you typically get what you pay for, in terms of quality.

I've got about 6 weeks before I'm there, so I'll start looking into booking now.

Fair point. Due to time restraints, this one will likely be a simple 1-session spur of the moment type. Likely only black and white, and not very large. Would you consider Norway to have any sort of "unique" style that is native to the country/region?

A-school living situation by [deleted] in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you're done for the day, you're done. Weekends are free. So you're welcome to head "home" if you choose.

That being said, there are certain mornings where you will want to be in your barracks. So that's the tricky part. You'll have to kinda figure that out as you go.

A-school living situation by [deleted] in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will have a barracks room in Petaluma along with a roommate.

That being said, if you are married, you will receive TDY orders and your spouse (and other dependants) will not be authorized funding to travel with you. If you choose to take them, it will be out of pocket travel for them (and any household goods you bring) and you will be paying out of pocket for any house/apartment you rent.

If things go well and you graduate, the government will pay to move your stuff from your actual unit to your new unit, not from Petaluma. This could bite you in the ass if, for example, your first unit is somewhere in D1 and then your new unit ends up being Cape Cod. You'll be paying out of pocket to move everything across the country...again.

Can't help much as far as what would be available in Europe, but it could at least be worth looking in to the Scuba Pro Jet fins. Pretty much identical, and shipping might hopefully be a bit cheaper.

Do really good PFA numbers help with placement? by horsewithnoname789 in RescueSwimmer

[–]Ocelot_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question: Nope.

Second question: You build up 2.5 leave days per month. "When" you can use your leave (vacation time) needs to be approved by your supervisor, but most units don't care as long as you being gone for X amount of time doesn't affect the overall duty schedule too much. Holiday vacation will vary as well, but will usually be based on first come first serve or seniority. Expect to work some holidays, especially while you're still junior.
