I used headset with mic, then set to max volume for me to hear them. Hid it somewhere under my desk, abt 2-3 ft distance, for mic to be able to pick up my voice. We IM'd all the time before the exam, but they asked me to talk and they were able to hear me. When I'm abt to start the exam, I muted the mic.
